Sachin Tendulkar vs Sunil Gavaskar

I have no doubt in my mind about that coming from a fan who followed him so closely. For whatever it is worth I am a bigger Vishy fan than a SMG fan and to date believe that he is the best worst pitch player India ever had but for his liking for the beer he should have accumulated more runs for a player of that genius and command.

There are many who beleive that, including Sunny himself. Vishy has slowly kind of faded into the background but for a long time he was India's most prized wicket. Would have loved to see him in full flow.

Sure you can prefer Sunny. I have no problem with that. I like both. However' date=' [b']one is quality and the other is quality is the statement I was taking issue with.

Needless to say you know this and remember it well. In that 1979 series SMG's 221 fell 8 runs short the margin with which India could not pull off a stunner chasing 420 odd at the Oval. To me still one of the best knocks one could ever play and would have been rated as the greatest ever knocks had we managed to score those 8 runs but for those poor decisions notably the one to send back Vishy to a howler India loses the plot there in the end to draw the game instead. I consider that a win and hence rate that knock as one of the best ever in the annals of Indian cricket alongside VVS's 281 or thereabouts.

Yes, I remember it vividly. He almost single-handedly won the match. But just like Sachin in the 90s, those days with Gavaskar went the hopes of India. Once he got out it was a procession. Can't really blame SMG nor can you Sachin, in circumstances like that when the rest of the team is shyt. I think in both their careers, SMG and SRT have been accused of scoring runs and not helping Indian wins. A few cases that criticism is warranted, but in many you have to wonder WTF the other players were doing!

We should have won the game, if only Kapil stuck around a bit. That test along with couple more down under 85 are chances lost. Wasnt Gavaskar nominated for Wisden for that knock?

1978 and 1979 was the Gavaskar's peak years. Unfortuantely, due to Packer defection he did not play against the best in a few series. I am sure he would have excelled enhancing his reputation against Lillee, etc which is a hole in my record.

Talking about bhakts, SMG was the one I was a blind worshipper of growing up. Refused to take any criticism of him and used to cry when he got out almost everytime. :hysterical:

And he admits it readily too. Whether one likes it or not I do appreciate the fact that Sunny was lot more open as a person, perhaps him being a writer (or ghost writer sometimes) helped him express better. If you read his books it is fairly evident he respected Lillee and admits he couldnt dominate him. That candid statement is worth appreciation. I frankly dont expect modern players, including Sachin, to be as blunt.

Well Sachin is not articulate as Sunny. You never know, once Sachin retires in 2020 (:omg:), he might open up...... But Sunny was a much more cunning person than Sachin and used to be involved in more regional politics. His feud with Kapil is well known. Sachin is more laid back and never known to have clashes with other stars in the team like Dravid, VVS, etc.

With all due respect SRT to me does not have a knock with that pedigree for the sheer volume of runs chased abroad and scoring 221 most of them on the 5th day. That does not mean SMG is better overall but none of SRT's knocks are a match to me in comparison to SMG's Oval 221 while chasing.

Good deal. Both are good. India would have ruled cricket had both of them played in the same era. :--D I don't care who was better b/c you can't really compare the two. Things change everyday forget two different eras. Just watch those old matches and enjoy the quality :hatsoff: My dad can't stop talking about Gavaskar. Everytime we watch a match together, he has at least one story about Gavaskar. I don't blame him. I'll do the same with my kids over tendulkar (if they are interested in cricket).

Although they were not double hundreds, but he did win us the game against England in Chennai in 2008 and also the knock against Pak in 1999 where the rest should have taken us over the line. Although Sunny's knock was special, there was no devil in the 4th and 5th day pitch in that match. It was fairly docile wicket for a 5th day pitch!

Yeah thats one reason Gavaskar was one I greatly respected but Kapil was the one who I loved.

I think we should be proud that we had batsmen of the calibre of SMG, SRT, Dravid, VVS, etc in the Indian team. Now how many special bowlers can you name that performed consistently at home and overseas for us?
