Does the concept of Private Sports agents exist in India?

i won't even go to other Sports in India as there is not much money in them anyways. so lets stick with the richest sport in Indian subcontinent. I was recently listening to an interview of Josh Luchs,a Sports agent about the way s he would go talent scouting in Colleges for potential NBA players. As Most of you know College sports in the U.S make millions and millions of dollars in revenue but the players are not paid anything.Obviously,their tutuion etc is taken care of. So this sports agent was talking about how he would scout talent and sign them up to his agency.Since,most players were from humble backgrounds,he would kind of take care of their needs till they turned pro and then sign them up. Obviously this is against the college rules but obviously sneaky businessmen always find a way around things.If the player went on to be a first choice draft pick or got picked by a team eventually,they would make huge commissions out of it. Even though some might feel this is the bastardization of sports,I think this might work in India atleast in the IPL.I don't know if this already exisits because no private firm in their sane mind would sign people like Lalu,Shivlal Yadav and Niranjan Shah's sons. mods Please go ahead and move this thread to any section you think would be relevant. I mentioned IPL as of now and not domestics because there is not enough money in it as of now but who knows if the quality improves people will automatically tune in. Do you guys think this is something that Can be applied to all level of Cricket Does anyone have more knowledge about this???

I do think they exist. Talking about agents , you may want to read the 'dirty' side -

In spite of his much-lauded contributions during the 2001 home series against Australia, Laxman could not capitalise on the occasion only because he did not have a good agent. ^ That is sad,but I am sure Laxman is not as much of a victim as some of the kids at school or even pre-ranji who just fade away....Laxman still had a mentor in the form of Dr.Sridhar in his domestic days and also had the support of Azhar to a certain extent.He may not be a brand like SRT,Dravid or Ganguly but still I am sure has enough cash flows coming in. I wonder if Tenvic only scouts at the domestic level eg;VK and Arvind.....I am talking about more in terms of agents scouting talents at the school or harrisshield levels....I am sure BCCI has talent scouts for these tournaments .

Ahmedabad: In bid to professionalise management of sports in the country, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has planned to introduce a course on Professional Management of Sports Organisation (PMSO) this year. "With the Commonwealth Games in Delhi this year and the popularity of Indian Premier League (IPL), what is happening is that sports management is emerging as a new field," IIM-A director Samir Barua told media persons today. "There is a good demand of talent in managing sports and world-over it has become an industry in itself. India is only now waking up in this kind of skill. This is a first move from our side to try and professionalise the management of sports," Barua said about the PMSO course which is part of the institutes's Management Development Progamme (MDP) 2010-11.

When asked if they had enough faculty for the course, the IIM-A director said, they will initially draw skills from outside as this is the first year of the course. Besides PMSO, the other course under MDP planned this year at IIM-A include Strategies of Growth, Peoples Issues in business Process outsourcing, Quality Management, Project Risk Management, Infrastructure Development and Policy and others. This year, 380 students have enrolled for the IIM-A's flagship Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) which include 341 males (89 per cent) and 39 females (10 per cent).

Old news but just browsing from one article to another ended up on this...interesting...:hmmm: Hopefully professional sports in terms of talent and management at a grass root level would improve...So if these guys graduated in 2011 as the first batch,can we expect more professionalism in the next 4-5 years?

Hopefully the entire concept of sports quota gets a new meaning...Imagine a national level athlete gets into a college under sports quota....gets paid for training and a stipend under a contract to pay back...will this work? the funds are there...just that we need more capable students ...hopefully these IIM grads are not poached by Euro and American leagues...Also wonder how the quality of this course matches against the other classes taught at IIM
