oh But we can always make a case for considering "minnow stats". Ponting's average against the supposed minnows - IRL, KEN, NAM & HOL - is 13.11, no kidding. He has a grand total of 118 runs in 9 matches against the four countries. The point is, Gayle is a decent enough ODI player and he can only uplift the awful Windies batting lineup.

He's certainly better than Powell or that Johnson guy. And besides, he adds one more spin option which can allow WI to have the luxury of dropping Russell since Pollard & Bravo did well, while Sammy is the captain.

It gets mentioned only if they don't. I don't disagree with you that Gayle would add value to the WI team (heck, even I'd probably add value right now). My point is that his performances don't warrant the kind of attention that he gets. This isn't the second coming of BC Lara or King.

Chris Gayle, the West Indies batsman, is scheduled to meet officials from the West Indies Cricket Board and CARICOM in St Vincent on Monday to discuss his future with the West Indies team. The Jamaica Gleaner has reported that Gayle is likely to either submit an apology or retract his comments made against the board and the coach Ottis Gibson during a radio interview.

T20 commitments prevent Gayle from agreeing with WICB

The return of Jamaican batsman Chris Gayle to the West Indies team has been delayed, as the former captain is yet to sign a deal agreed on by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and CARICOM at a meeting in St Vincent today. A high level meeting chaired by Prime Minister of St Vincent, Ralph Gonsalves was expected to resolve the dispute that has kept Gayle out of the regional team for close to a year. The meeting also involved WICB chief executive Ernest Hilaire, WICB President Julian Hunte and Gayle. But CMC Sports is reporting that the deal would have seen both Gayle and the WICB acknowledging that mistakes had been made during the impasse, but agreeing to move forward in the spirit of compromise. The deal would have seen Gayle available for the current series against Australia, which ends on April 27. However, Gayle is yet to agree as he is contracted to play in the Indian Premier League which runs from April 4 to May 27 and the English County Twenty20 tournament. The Indian Premier League clashes with both the current Australia tour and West Indies tour of England from May 5 to June 24. CMC Sports says Gayle is keen on fulfilling all his contractual international Twenty20 obligations. The dominant left-hander has not played for West Indies since the World Cup quarter-final against Pakistan last March, after being sidelined for controversial public criticisms of the WICB and team coach Ottis Gibson. He had been mandated by the board to withdraw his comments before he could be considered for selection but the player refused.

Decision on Gayle's future delayed

Chris Gayle's expected return to the West Indies team has been delayed after no decision could be arrived at during Monday's high-level meeting, which was expected to resolve the year-long dispute between the player and the West Indies Cricket Board. Chaired by Prime Minister of St Vincent, Ralph Gonsalves, the meeting was also attended by WICB chief executive, Ernest Hilaire and officials from CARICOM.

State of Resolution Chris Gayle Impasse The West Indies Cricket Board and Mr. Christopher Gayle have brought closure to the impasse which has dogged their relationship for over a year and kept Mr Gayle out of the West Indies cricket team since April last year. The resolution of this dispute in West Indian cricket has come abut after a face-to-face meeting between WICBÃÔ President, Dr Julian Hunte, and Mr Gayle in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Both sides admit that their respective shortcomings contributed to the debilitating impasse and its prolonged nature, and resolved to bring it to an end, in a spirit of reconciliation and in recognition of the fact that West Indian cricket takes our regional community beyond the boundary for our peopleÃÔ upliftment and ennoblement. They agree that there are lessons to be learnt from this episode by all concerned, which ought to redound to the benefit of West Indies cricket. They affirm that West Indies Cricket is bigger than everyone. Accordingly, each side further agreed to make certain statements, declarations, and commitments. For his part, Mr Gayle: Expressed his regret for making an earlier contentious statement which could have been interpreted, and was so interpreted in several responsible quarters, as bringing the Board and Management of West Indies cricket into disrepute. Reaffirmed his commitment of support to the players on the team and the team management, inclusive of his solemn pledge as a senior professional to be an exemplar to his fellow professionals, especially the younger ones. Declared an unwavering solidarity with the people of this region, including the WICB, in their quest to restore West Indian cricket to its former glory, a condition which in part touches upon, and reflects, a further ennoblement of our Caribbean civilization. For its part, the WICB though its President: Reaffirmed its unequivocal commitment to serving the people of our region by striving for excellence in West Indian cricket and the advancing of the tried and tested values of our Caribbean civilization. Declared that the WICBÃÔ disciplinary process is outdated which undoubtedly contributed to the length of time that this impasse or dispute took to be resolved. Expressed its firm intention to review all existing arrangements or codes, within the context of its ICC obligations and the applicable law, touching and concerning a range of relevant issues including discipline and players eligibility for selection, which review is to be done in concert with the West Indies Players Association (WIPA). Accepted Mr GayleÃÔ statement of regret as sincere; welcomed his reaffirmed commitment to West Indian cricket, the team and the management; and embraced him in his pledge to be an exemplar as a senior professional. In light of all this, WICB and Mr Gayle agree that the way is now clear for his active return to West Indian crick subject to all necessary and formal arrangements.
