Chris Gayle clear for the active return to West Indies cricket

The CARICOM Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on Cricket (PMCSCC) is pleased to announce that the year-long impasse between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and Mr. Chris Gayle has been resolved. The way is now clear for the active return of Mr. Gayle, as a player, to West Indies cricket subject to all necessary fitness considerations. Three documents form the basis of this resolution and are now being released into the public domain. They are: Å¢ Statement of Resolution on the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Chris Gayle Impasse? signed by His Excellency Dr. Julian Hunte, President of the WICB, and witnessed by Chairman of the PMCSCC, the Honorable Baldwing Spencer, on the 18th day of March, 2012, at Young Island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This Statement was subsequently signed by Mr. Chris Gayle in Jamaica on the 23rd day of March 2012 in the presence of the Most Honorable Percival J. Patterson. A Å´ide Letter? dated the 23rd day of March, 2012 written by Mr. Gayle and sent to the Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. The Hon. Ralph E. Gonsalves, for transmission to Dr. Hunte of the WICB A ųesponse to Mr. GayleÃÔ Side Letter? dated the 29th day of March, 2012, written by Dr. Hunte of the WICB to Prime Minister Gonsalves for transmission to Mr. Gayle a ŧurther letter by Mr. Gayle? dated April 01, 2012 to Prime Minister Gonsalves for transmission to Dr. Hunte At the soonest appropriate time, the PMCSCC will convene a meeting between the WICB and Mr. Gayle to tidy up residual matters. A date is to be set for this meeting convenient to all parties, including Mr. Gayle, who is currently in India. This meeting is separate and distinct from the one which the WICB hand earlier requested the PMCSCC to summon on larger issues touching and concerning the governance and direction of West Indies Cricket, including the Strategic Plan of the WICB for West Indies Cricket. This latter meeting between PMCSCC and the WICB is scheduled for the 30th day of April, 2012. On behalf of the PMCSCC I would like to thank both sides in the impasse for their commitment to its successful resolution; both Dr. Hunte and Mr. Gayle are to be commended. I am most grateful, too, for the personal efforts fo Prime Minister Gonsalves as ÅÕhe good faith facilitator in hammering out a settlement. I am aware that Dr. Gonsalves received much assistance from the Most Honorable Portia Simpson-Miller (Prime Minister of Jamaica), the Most Honorable Percival J. Patterson (Former Prime Minister of Jamaica), Mr. Micheal Holding, and individual members of the WICB with whom he consulted. I thank them all. All their efforts have been undertaken within the framework of the mandate given to the PMCSCC by the recent Heads of Government Conference of CARICOM in Suriname. Chris Gayle has pulled out of his Twenty20 contract with Somerset, declaring himself committed to playing for West Indies in all forms of the game. The move could smooth the way for Gayle to return to the West Indies side for the upcoming tour of England, which would end a year-long standoff between Gayle and the WICB that stemmed from comments he made about the board in a radio interview last April. Gayle was not chosen in the Test squad for the England tour but after progress was made in reaching a resolution between the two parties, he was considered a chance to be selected for the three ODIs that follow the Tests. However, those matches clash with the Friends Life t20, a tournament for which Gayle had agreed to play with Somerset, and the WICB chief executive Ernest Hilaire said Gayle could not be considered unless he categorically made himself available. "I wish to advise that as of today, May 2nd, 2012, I have written to Somerset CC and advised them that I will not be honouring the commitment I made to them when I signed a contract with them for the 2012 [Friends Life t20]. I made it clear to them that my decision was made because of my commitment to West Indies cricket and to West Indies cricket fans, and because ... I believe that it is time for the WICB to make a decision which will provide a clearer view of my own future. "I understand that by making this decision, it may place me in a position of considerable risk, since I am foregoing a signed contract, without any guarantees whatsoever, with only the hope that I will be selected to play for the West Indies again.
