SCS disputes involving China and a host of East Asian countries including Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan flared up in recent months
Taking on Philippines means taking on another 4 countries on. Not to mention the US has close military ties with Philippines including US military bases there. Also Philippines is part a very strong economic and political block, the ASEAN group which surrounds China. Upsetting them will mean these countries will block one of the blood veins of Chinese trade, Strait of Malacca. So very unlikely China will do anything, this just mere pussy talk from their jingoistic media.

But this conflicts is not going go away, it's not the oil the Chinese want, it's the full access to the rich sealife of South China Seas to feed it's every growing affluent population. Wait till you hear Chinese fishing trawlers scouring Arctic and Antarctica oceans, Red Sea, Atlantic, and other rich resources of fish. The Chinese love their meat and fish.

Playing the devil's advocate here: Wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy the fish than incur the cost of war with another sovereign nation, which as you say, is a member of an influential military/political group and live with the long term repercussions of such a war? Chairman Mao to his adviser: No pomphret on my plate today, lets invade the Philippines :woot: " If there's no bread, let them eat cake" :D

The SCS countries especially Vietnam have been pleading India for full scale support but our ingrained cluelessness in the matters of realpolitik is holding us back. IIRC, the Vietnamese president even asked India to behave its size of 1.2 billion people. Here is the perfect opportunity to check mate China which has been propping up a Jihadi country like Pakistan only to tie-up India. Gifted Nuclear weapons to Pakis thus paving way for audacious killing sprees like Mumbai without any real fear of retaliation. Is making strategic inroads into our neighborhood....so much so that they have more influence in Nepal and SriLanka then India..

Yes, it would be cheaper just to buy and feed their citizens instead risking a war, BUT only if China's population wasn't over 1 billion. Chinese communist party are working towards a very laudable goal to ensure none of their citizens go hungry and more importantly a push for well fed population with high intake of protein with the specific aim for each Chinese person to eat high protein (meat) meals 3 times a day. Now multiply that aim by 1 billion and the incredible strain on the Chinese agriculture and livestock industry becomes untenable. Hence the need to secure access to other protein rich sources i.e. fish, livestock in Africa, Brazil, etc. The China effect has already doubled the price of beef globally in the last 10 years. http://www.indexmundi.com/commodities/?commodity=beef&months=120 Prior to that period the price of beef had been unchanged for over 30 years (where records are available) Prices of poultry, pork, and lamb are following the similar trends. So cheaper to secure SCS by force then pay market prices. Though Vietnam have already got bitter and proud memories of defeating a Chinese invasion in the 80s.

Chinese media is the same type of Peepli Live jingoistic media as Indian Media. They even BSed about the Agni V whereas China officially said that they did not mind. It is like the case in India except that Indian Media forces govt. to do things at times with their jingoistic reporting and to get more vote banks.
