Sidhoni Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Search giant Google has 'zipped' its homepage today to celebrate the birthday of Gideon Sundback, the inventor of the zipper. A click, and the page unzips to reveal a search results page on the Swedish-born engineer. Born on April 24, 1880, Sundback migrated to United States from Sweden in 1905. There he worked at the Universal Fastener Company in New Jersey, and went on to become its head designer in 1909. Further, building upon the work of engineers like Elias Howe, Max Wolff and Whitcomb Judson, Sundback improved the company's product "Judson C-curity Fastener". A form of zipper it was based on hooks which were interlocked by moving a slider. The improved version, though better, could still be pulled apart easily. In the year 1914, Sundback developed a version of zipper based on interlocking teeth, the "Hookless No. 2", which is regarded as the base of modern-day metal zippers. A patent for his invention was filed in 1914 and issued in 1917. In initial days, the zipper wasn't called a zipper, but referred to as a 'separable fastener'. B F Goodrich company which later used Sundback's 'separable fastener' in its products named it zipper. Sundback is also credited for developing the manufacturing machine for the new zipper. The 'S-L' or scrapless machine took a special Y-shaped wire and cut scoops from it, then punched the scoop dimple and nib, and clamped each scoop on a cloth tape to produce a continuous zipper chain. Google doodles are the decorative changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists and scientists. The first doodle was created by Larry Page and Sergy Brin in the year 1998 to mark the celebrations of the Burning Man Festival. https://www.google.co.in/ :nice:
