Crookbond Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 I actually thought that such an incident will happen in Britain. I remember the Ind-Pak WC game then and as soon as the game got over the crowd poured in with players running through the crowd to the safety of dressing rooms. One of the Indian fans was injured in the melee (not sure whether he was attacked or got injured in the stampede) and the guy was bleeding from the head. Could very well have been a player and generally fans abroad are more jingoistic than the ones residing in native countries. Anyone recollect the 2001 Natwest series involving Pakistan, England and Australia in 2001? Plenty of trouble with crowds running onto the pitch. I found a video. vkCmGG9oFQE During this series, I almost thought there would be a Seles like incident. Another series would be Australia in West Indies 1999 - repeated crowd trouble totally ridiculous. Mind you, when West Indies toured India in 2002 if I'm not wrong the first two ODI's for the 7 match series also face some crowd trouble.

Crookbond Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 I am actually amazed nobody has been seriously hurt or killed in one of those regular stampedes that used to happen in England earlier as the video showed. It was a regular feature throughout the series and the English as staunch as they are about theri "culture" didn't want to change those old grounds. A case in point the 1999 WC. Absolutely disgraceful is what I can say. No games under lights with a fire on the opening day of cricket .... eeks!

One other thing I remember about 1999 World Cup is that the day the official song/album of the World Cup was the day England were knocked out of the tourney by India :hysterical: I mean it took them few weeks into the tourney to come out with the official song/album :haha:
PaceAttack Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Pakistani crowd has always treated Indians very well. Reason- Bollywood movies. Indian crowd has always pakistanis like ****. Reason- Terrorism.

Ultimate_Game Posted July 26, 2012 Author Posted July 26, 2012 India I guess were already knocked out and just playing for pride' date=' weren't they?[/quote'] Nope. That was the last group game and India had to beat England to get into super 6s which they did. In hindsight that loss to Zimbabwe proved our undoing in that tourney as we moved t the next round with 0 points while others had 4 or 2. That way a huge disadvantage to overcome as we had to win all our games to have any chance in the tourney. When we lost to Aus in our first super 6 game it was curtains for us Loss to Zim would have stil have been fine if SA hadn't lost to Zim, which was one of the biggest upsets, coz if SA had beaten Zim, India would have gone to the next round with 2 points with Eng as the 3rd team from the group We weren't that bad in the tourney. It's just that we were way too cautious and lost winnable games. Against SA we were something like 180-190/1 in 36 or 37 overs and we ended up with a total of 250 odd when a total of 270-280 was there for the taking  We left the charge at th death way too late and even then we couldn't score quickly enough and leaving at least 20-30 runs on the field. Against Zim, even after conceding more than 50 runs in extras :omg: we managed to reach a winning position until our brainless tail imploded and we lost 3 wkts in an over toOlonga with Robin Singh looking helplessly from the other end. A single to give Robin Singh the strike or some common sense from our tail would have finished the match which we lost by 2 runs IIRC
carnish Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Bad memories for India in that series losing both opening games against SAF and ZIM ... pretty bad losses against ZIM. Remember Venky Prasad and Debasis Mohanty being the main culprit behind our 56 odd extras which I guess was a record for then..or near the record. I guess we had missed Tendulkar for the ZIM game because of his fathers death but he returned for the next game against Kenya and scored a brilliant century .. India then did very well to reach the super sixes but sad we lost two games there against Australia and New Zealand to bow out from the tourney. However the series will be remembered for the great India Pakistan match in which we had just made 225 and yet we won the match courtesy Venky who got a 5-fer. Venky was Pakistan's nemesis in WC games having got Sohail in 1996 WC and yet again he showed why he loved Pakistan. Also remember the Taunton game against SRL where Ganguly scored 183 and Dravid got a 150+ score .. we pawned the Lankans. Good Days
vamos_rafa Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 ^ Yes. Also, I loved Sachin's inning of 45 against Pak. The ball was really swinging around and he handled and rather pulled Akhtar with some aplomb. Waz was also at his cunning best then and he was superb against him too. It was shameful that he got out to Azhar Mehmood caught on the boundary. Then, for a change Azhar scored some 50 odd taking apart Saqlain in the process. For me the dissapointment, apart from the loss to zim, was our performance against Oz. We laid too much importance on Sachin(remember Dungarpur's statement once we qualified to supe 6's that now it's Sachin's turn to win us the cup). Srinath was also caught up in the hype of speed race with McGrath and kept on bowling short. And I never understood that Jadeja scored 100, Robin Singh scored 80 and chasing 283, we lost by 80 odd runs. the rest of the team scored 20 odd runs!
StatsRock Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 i still remember kambli crying like a scolded girl when the semifinal was awarded to srilanka Atleast he cried over the defeat. Unlike some of your players who would have whispered to the Sri Lankans, "There, I gifted you the match. Now where are my promised ear-rings?"
StatsRock Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 well sorry to know how a nation of most civilized cricket fans suffered because of extremist elements on "other" side they regularly got to face... You guys have quite brilliant memories and do remember second by second details of such incidents, so if StatsRock or anyone else do know with "^such detail" what exactly happened when during a Test match vs India, 1987, Ahmedabad; match was almost got abandoned, all players and umpires went off the field but after few time Imran Khan came back in ground with all of his players wearing helmets and Pakistani team actually did fielding in remaining match with helmets on :) any genuine reason for such 'stupid' act? asim, I like to think you are a guy with class unlike most of the jingoistic morons who write stupid comments on youtube videos...please let my perception continue. I definitely remember the 1987 Test match. Now that wasn't the only time Ahmedabad crowd behaved like idiots. They also threw stones in the Hero Cup ODI vs West Indies in Nov 1993. So what did the BCCI do? They swung into action and slapped a 3 year ban on Ahmedabad, which ultimately was reduced by 6 months due to the 1996 World Cup. And in contrast, how did PCB treat Karachi? In the 1982-83 Test vs India, the police had to teargas an idiotic mob of students who were creating havoc in the stands and also fired at demonstrators. I still remember a photograph where the idiots had burnt seat cushions and threw table fans into the ground. Read more: http://www.espncricinfo.com/wisdenalmanack/content/story/153651.html And again in 1985-86 against WI, with the ODI series level 2-2, the teams braced up for the final ODI. Wisden tells you the rest : "Expectations of a thrilling match to decide the series were dashed as Pakistan's batsmen struggled against the pace and accuracy of Marshall and Holding. Intermittent crowd disturbances - hundreds invaded the field of play when Pakistan were 87 for four and a stand was set alight - reduced Pakistan's innings to 38 overs" Wanna guess which venue? Karachi! And then the Karachi-ites did even better in the 1989 ODI series against India. Not merely satisfied with making their dissatisfaction public, they relentlessly continued their savagery until the match was called off. And how did PCB reward them? They continued to host atleast one international for the next 5 years!! Wonder what would have happened if Pakistan were to lose a World Cup semifinal before 110,000Karachi fans with their rich history of thuggish behavior! :--D Somehow, the unruliness of Indian crowds appears inflated due to Calcutta '96. I am not bothering to look it up but merely off the top of my head can narrate enough crowd trouble in Pakistan. For instance, this game too comes to mind, at Gujranwala in the 1986-87 series against West Indies, when the crowd threw 'bottles and firecrackers at the West Indians'. http://www.espncricinfo.com/wisdenalmanack/content/story/150666.html Needless to say, Gujranwala continued to host internationals for the next 3 years! So in summary, it appears that atleast a few hosting associations in Pakistan felt they were entitled to stone visiting cricketers and the board did not deem it fit to take action against them! Now moving on to the Ahmedabad match you quoted....At the beginning of the Test, Gavaskar had some 9938 Test runs and a pretty substantial crowd turned up on Day 1 hoping to see him get his 10000th run. And what did they get? Pakistan batted first and crawled to 130-4 after batting for 86 overs!!! Kapil Dev was interviewed on TV after Day 1 and he blasted them for killing the game. Gavaskar reached 10000 on Day 4. There was mild rioting that evening which SUBSIDED after the players appealed to the crowd. Pakistan took up their second innings and this time raced to 135-2 in a mere 99 overs! So, in essence, 130-4 off 86 overs, followed by 135-2 off 99 overs. Yeah, Ahmedabad had its share of thugs but I seriously sympathise with them for having had to endure such painful batting :--D
Ultimate_Game Posted July 27, 2012 Author Posted July 27, 2012 ^^^^ StatsRock :hatsoff: You should post more often.
Ultimate_Game Posted July 27, 2012 Author Posted July 27, 2012 and in the meanwhile you can gather your fellow imbecile trolls and continue to troll ... this should encourage Statsrock and his types to post more :two_thumbs_up: Says the greatest troll going around who only crawls out when he hears the word "Tendulkar" :hysterical: Maybe you can give us an in-depth analysis on frame rate and FPS of the clip and based on that perform an analysis of Tendulkar's technique in his earlier years :giggle:

The only time when I, and many Indian fans, actually fell asleep watching/listening to a Test match, that too between India and Pakistan. It was slowest half century or something like that. Zaman and Shoaib Mohammed were two extremely slow batsmen for Pakistan. Cant remember seeing anyone like them, aside from Chris Tavare perhaps. Oddly enough both Zaman and Shoaib were great fielders, specially Shoaib who was perhaps the best Pakistan fielder of his time, maybe all time.
Khalpat Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 I am not sure how much truth is with this incident which I read once long back. There was a match going on between WI and Pakistan in WI during late 1960's and US President came to watch that match. Pakistan team batted for whole day and made something like 175 runs and after the match president said, "Is this what you call cricket, thank god we Americans play Baseball".. Talking about slow batsman I dont think anyone can come near Mudassar NAzar. I remember seeing Ramiz Raja and Mudassar opening was the most boring display of cricket.

I read about a variation of the story you mentioned. An American dignitary was invited to watch a cricket game in England. The game started, bowlers ran in to bowl the opening spells and the batsmen either left the deliveries or blocked the deliveries as is the norm at the start of the game. The American dignitary watched the game for half an hour or so and asked his host "When do they start playing?" :haha:

The dignitary in the above story was Groucho Marx.
