Why India not building more planned cities? We have Chandigarh, it's planned city. Maybe that's why it is cleanest city in India, HDI is highest, law and order problems are very less. Traffic cop's don't hesitate to challan likes of Harbhajan and Yuvraj. There should be 1 such planned city after every 200km radius. I have spend 1yr+ in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Chandigarh resembles that place so much. Instead of wasting 1000000s of crore's on some stupid scheme's, Govt. should build such cities.

Population of Chandigarh is very low compared to other cities.Good thing happening in india right now is that most of the cities are expanding in to its outskirts. So they can accomodate more people.

Cities can be planned if there is industry or offices.Chandigarh's case was different .Lahore the capital of British Punjab was given to Pakistan and Eastern Punjab desperately needs a capital. That's why Chandigarh is planned. This is not going to be case with most of cities. Constructions of apartments is going on full scale nearby Delhi in Haryana, and Uttar pradesh and lot of people have bought property but it will take years when people will start occupying them .

How about India make stuff people around the world want to buy. Currently too few states are responsible for keeping India's current account deficit manageable. Whilst the rest just growing under guise of "developing" on a borrowing binge from Centre.

Opening more special economic zones would probably be more effective and cost the government practically nothing at all. The Chinese have been doing this extremely well. India has started to increase apporvals for SEZs as well.
