Where are India's next test openers?

look i know they all hyped him up but are u really gonna buy this he played those shots cos he was playing in odis ? really? in odis u have so much time to settle in and go big at end worst part is he failedm ostly when he came in early with many overs to go and way he got out it had nothing to do with balls left or pressure test cricket is much harder and rohit's weakness actually will be more exploited there btw been following him from start he plays like this even in domestic matches.. also plz dont just take the word of commies like a sheep watch him play...did ya see how he batted in south africa? guy was not even able to touch a ball with his perfect technique..just watch it and come back to me

I have watched him play many times. I am also a professional batting coach so I know what good batting technique should look like. So I'm not just going by commentators, I am looking at what I see. He has the technique to succeed at Test level and has the domestic record to show he's earnt it. He averages nearly 60 in domestic first class cricket and despite that Indian fans continue to use his ODI and T20 performances to discredit him. This mentality is exactly why Indian cricket is so f***ed up atm. Players with obvious technical flaws like Raina and Yuvraj get chance after chance after chance because they have played good ODI innings and yet players with strong techniques and better first class records like Rohit Sharma & Ajinkya Rahane are forced to wait on the sidelines. We're getting what we deserve if this is the mentality we have.

I am sure we will find our next opener again from the crop of the middle order batsmen we have , like we did with Sehwag. Rahane for sure has my vote but hopefully he will given a debut in India and not being asked to open in SA after Gambhir and Sehwag continue to falter vs Aussies at home.

Rahane has opened many times before. Most good No.3 batsmen are more than capable of opening the batting. Rahane could easily accustom to opening the batting. If your technique is good enough for No.3, it's good enough for opening the batting because you need to be ready for an early wicket.

Well this thread is about openers in test cricket, so we are talking Mukund here. Rohit's name was brought in to show the number of chances he has gotten compared to the number of chances guys like Mukund have gotten.

oh he is any day better then raina and yuvraj but thing is i dont think he is comfortable as batsman with his current technique look at smith...his technique has so many flaws but he knows how to bat with it which is rohit struggling to do wht i dont get is the excuses...he failed in odis cos there was pressure blab blab not true look how he batted look at his flaws its time he works on them and learns how to bat with it even kohli does not has perfect technique but he has all bases covered... and that is what batting is all about there is no perfect technique its more abt playing with ur limitations and succeeding btw this isj ust for fun chappel has backed these guys unmukt chand he said he should be in indian side and he is struggling in ranjis rohit sharma ..and he hasnt proven himself yet also every one talks about how talented umar akmal is how he has every shot...and honestly i have never seen a proper cover drive from this guy :cantstop:

It's not excuses. I am saying he should be dropped from the ODI and T20 side. Picking players in the wrong format doesn't do anyone justice. Look at Pujara ... Strong first-class record and given a chance in Tests. Not asked to go prove himself in ODIs and T20s. He has shown he is capable (at least at home) in Test cricket. Rohit's first-class record is very strong. When Tendulkar gives up Test cricket, Rohit Sharma should be given the opportunity.

Yep its a tough choice between them but when deciding between 2 players both with strong first-class records and both in form in domestic cricket at the moment, go with the guy with the better technique. I hope you at least agree that Rohit Sharma's technique is better than Manoj Tiwary's. If you don't, I suggest you start watching another sport. :p

Having said that I would pick Tiwary or Mandeep Singh over Ravindra Jadeja. Tiwary should be given the first chance on the back of years of run making at Ranji but Mandeep Singh is a special talent and should be kept in the horizon.

Well you should care about technique because technique is the main area where Indian batsmen have failed in Tests over the past 2 years. I did judge his technique from ODIs. Whats wrong with that. I am saying using ODI performances to keep him out of the Test side is silly when he is scoring a lot of runs at first-class level.

i know whats wrong cos when i judge technique of rohit form odis every one says he played like that cos its odi and what not! lets have same criteria for every one tiwary deserves a chance before being judged just like rohit ..

What special about rohit technique is he does not have any Preemptive movement like most batsman have like forward press or backward press.He stands still and then goes on front foot or backfoot like tendulkar.Its Hard thing to do as it needs exceptional eye and concentration.His head is still as pointed out and he has strokes all round with a front defence he can work on .

Offcourse its the ideal technique,But you need concentration and a great eye to judje the length of the ball like tendulkar or you will miss straight balls.

Ah this is so silly. This is the worst part of forums. Ok you've got 2 players with strong first-class records. Player A has better technique than Player B. Most other countries would just go with Player A. But in India you'll have people looking at Player A's ODI record and his T20 record and this and that. Add to that he's received a strong endorsement from almost every commentator that watches him. It's not mindless following. It's agreement from a lot of cricketing experts. Now keep in mind I would pick Tiwary at No.6 instead of Ravindra Jadeja. I would pick Rohit Sharma at No.4 once Tendulkar goes.
