In the UK when tradgedies like this occurs to a poor family, we often begin a fund to donate into to help them as best we can. I know that nothing can bring the poor girl back, but she was the hope of her family and I understand they are in debt for her education etc. I have searched the internet, but cannot find any link. Has there been anything in the news in India to help them? I am avoiding comment re the crime itself, so please focus on the question Cheers Wobbly

Are you showing pity or indicating their financial status?

The news over here states that the family are of limited means IE Poor. They were relying on the young lady to improve their financial situation and had invested everything to fund her education, we are told. So I wanted to donate to a fund to help them. And yes they are poor, as in the victims of this terrible crime on their loved one

In Delhi that is not a great money but considering how poor they were it should be of great help. The most important thing is both govts. have offered a job. So that should provide a stable income. I heard the college where she studied is also returning her fees.

Thanks Superstar, it is good to hear that they will hopefully not suffer financially as well as emotionally.
DomainK Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 35 lakhs is a very big amount for a lower middle class (AFAIK) family from rural India. Add to that the job and they will be well off. No amount of money will ever bring their daughter/sister back, but at least they won't be left miserable financially.

But Arundhati Roy would disagree with you.

There is a provision that if a government employee dies prematurely, one his direct family members would be offered a government job. I have seen people wait for years, sometimes as long as 10 years to get that job and then end with a lowly job way below the qualifications of the person in question. And in most cases, they ask for bribes. In this case however, I expect it will be fast. The government won't risk much with such a high profile case.
