1983-2011 Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Actor accused of killing one man and injuring three others by allegedly ramming car into group of homeless people in 2002 The Indian film star Salman Khan will be tried for homicide over his alleged involvement in a fatal road accident more than 10 years ago, according to his attorney. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison. Deepesh Mehta, Khan's lawyer, said a magistrate had accepted an appeal by state government prosecutors that he should be charged with homicide instead of causing death by negligence, a charge which carries a maximum of two years in prison. One man was killed and three more injured when Khan allegedly rammed his car into a group of homeless people sleeping on a Mumbai sidewalk in September 2002. Khan's trial begins on 11 March. May be nothing will happen right now, but it will come back to haunt him later. However, something interesting happened a few days ago. A man was arrested for killing people in a drunk driving case. The prosecution charged him with homicide and got a conviction in a session court. On appeal, however, a high court has asked the prosecution to drop the charged of homicide and charge him with rash and negligent driving. The high court said that since when he decided to drive while drunk, he had no knowledge that he was going to get into an accident killing people, it can not be homicide. It's a dangerous precedent being set by the high court.

It is non-bailable, so Salman might get arrested soon. To be honest, Salman is paying penalty for being a celebrity in both of his cases. If he wasn't a celebrity, this case might have been closed with family of victim being given compensation amount. Police too would have settled issue in their own ways. In many of such cases family of victim doesn't press too hard as killing wasn't intentional and may contend with compensation amount. But Salman being such a big celebrity case can't be pushed under carpet and police action is always under scanner. Not that I am sympathetic to Salman, he should be punished for his carelessness, but I feel a little known person could have got off rather easily.

If I remember correctly in another black bucks case as well, he has spent few nights in jail.

But you get the jist of what i meant, no real punishment will happen

If actors like Salman Khan even have to spend few months in prison then it will act as deterrent to all other who do drunken driving.people will start fearing laws and give example to each other that if Salman is not spared what chances they have

Some special evidence you have seen that others have not? What makes you feel so certain about celebrities being punished even if proven guilty? One such precedent is Sanju "baba" who got away scot-free after being booked under TADA!! For storing weapons and aiding in waging war against India!!! In comparison, what are a few homeless slum dwellers killed by a drunken celebrity?!?
