Suryakant Pradhan creates History for Odisha

Pacer Suryakant Pradhan became the first bowler of Odisha to take a seven-wicket haul in ODI format of first class cricket, as he powered his team to a 235-run victory over Jharkhand in the East Zone leg of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, Odisha finished third in the zone after Assam and Bengal and failed to qualify for the knockout stage. Suryakant beat the record of former Test cricketer and todayÃÔ Odisha Coach Debashis Mohanty, who had taken five wickets against Bengal in 2000-01. The 20-year-old Suryakant, who hails from Khordha, conceded just 39 runs. Several records were created in yesterdayÃÔ match. This is the highest-ever victory margin for Odisha in ODI format. Also, Paresh Patel and Arabind Singh added 214 runs for the second wicket a new record for Odisha. Arabind scored a century on his debut. He is the first player from Odisha to score a hundred in debut in the List A matches. Odisha scored 353/4 in 50 overs, thanks to Paresh Patel (126) and Arabind Singh (132). Jharkhand were 43/8 at one stage, but managed to score 93 in the end.

Pradhan's impressive show came after his batting colleagues Paresh Patel (126) and Arabind Singh (132) smashed a century each as Odisha posted a massive 353 for four wickets after being sent into bat Jadavpur University Complex. Chasing 354 for a win, Jharkhand slumped to 43 for eight in the 13th over with seven of their batsmen having been dismissed by Pradhan. Only two Jharkhand batsmen could reach double figures with number nine Rahul Shukla making 50 from 55 balls while number 10 Jaskaran Singh scoring 23 from 38 balls. Both fell to Odisha captain Biplab Samantray (2/5). Earlier, Paresh Patel and Arabind Singh shared 114 runs for the second wicket to lay the foundation of a huge score. Samantray contributed 37 not out while Govind Podder scored 26. For Jharkhand, Rahul Shukla grabbed two wickets for 76 while Ajay Yadav and Jaskaran Singh got a wicket apiece. Odisha grabbed five points from the win, including a bonus point, while Jharkhand got minus one.

Suryakant Pradhan never thought he would one day be playing for Orissa Under-19 cricket team. Pradhan who hails from Barbil village of Keonjhar district preferred cricket than pursuing any other sport. The burning desire for the game was such that he even rode three to four kilometres everyday on his bicycle for practice. “The practice ground was very far and I had to start at least half an hour before. It was difficult for me but the desire to play the game and represent Orissa made me stronger and cricket is my first love,” Pradhan said. Pradhan who began his career in 2008 representing the U-16 team, under the supervision of Sumit Bose, was devoid of facilities, but that did not stop him from achieving his goal. “The village does not have proper ground for practice but I never thought of these obstacles and just carried on with my game. I am very passionate about cricket and want to be associated with it for the rest of my life,” Pradhan said. A huge fan of Sachin Tendulkar and Biplab Samantray, Pradhan who practises at the Rising Students Club ground, believes that his all-round skills will help him to wear the India cap. “I can bowl and bat without fatigue and an all-rounder is very much in demand these days. But most importantly I have to find a place in the Ranji Trophy squad and come up with startling performances to impress the selectors,” Pradhan who scored an unbeaten 125 runs against West Bengal in 2008 on his debut said. “I never miss watching Sachin bat and I am also a huge fan of Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath,” Pradhan added. Known for maintaining an accurate line and length, Pradhan proved his mettle when he picked 11 wickets against Assam in the recently concluded under-19 cricket tournament. “It was one of my best performances and I will make sure that I come up with more such performances,” Pradhan said. When asked how he prepares before the start of match, the all-rounder said, “I go to the field with a positive attitude and my focus is always to contribute for the team’s success.” Special he is indeed, Pradhan also wants to improve his batting abilities and for that he often seeks the guidance of current Orissa One-day team skipper Biplab. “Biplab bhai has always been kind enough to help me better my technique and I talk to him a lot about the game. My aim is to play alongside with him and for that I am ready to sacrifice anything,” he signed off.
