seedhi Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Multiple sources said that his name (Sunil and Mike) were named on the BostonPD Scanner http://globalgrind.com/news/411-sunil-tripathi-missing-brown-university-alleged-suspect-boston-marathon-bombings-photos http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/04/19/17823365-tweeting-police-chatter-creates-confusion-over-boston-suspectAll these were based on rumors. There was no mention of that name on the scanner, some individual(s) on twitter just made it up and it was picked up and people ran with it. Quite scary actually.

There was no mention of that name on the scanner' date=' some individual(s) on twitter just made it up and it was picked up and people ran with it. If you choose not to believe them, I cant help that. It might have been just inconsequential chatter but their names were taken which redditors took too seriously because of confirmation bias. That is how the name of Mike Mulugetta came on, no redditor or 4chan user had guessed his name before, that was fed from the scanner
Crookbond Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Did you hear his name on the scanner ? Apparently' date=' no one heard his name, but some guy simply made it up in a tweet that this name was heard on the scanner and it went viral. Ridiculous. And sad.[/quote'] YES - I heard the name. That's where Miike Mulugeta comes in too.
Crookbond Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 That's a big problem with the over-analysis of conversations. There's enough idiots out there to create fake signals out of all the noise. It was just the news media earlier, we have the social media doing its part which makes things worse. Somewhere between the two: [1.5] wannabe smartasses who think they can solve terrorism cases on the interwebs. Maybe not mischief mongers, just purely incompetent and dumb. Look mate - I can't speak for others but I "heard" both the names on the scanner. You choose not to believe me, I can't help you.
coffee_rules Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 A lot of the stuff reported in boston police scanners is never caught by the main stream media. The story about a robot removing a bomb stapped to a 60 year old mechanic suspect seems to be a hoax as well.
seedhi Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 YES - I heard the name. That's where Miike Mulugeta comes in too.Was his name mentioned along with Mike Mulugeta's ? Do you have any recording anywhere ? Around what time did you hear his name? According to this article Sunil Tripathi's name was never mentioned on the scanner. ....... Meanwhile, at 2:14am Eastern, an official on the police scanner said, "Last name: Mulugeta, M-U-L-U-G-E-T-A, M as in Mike, Mulugeta." And thus was born the newest suspect in the case: Mike Mulugeta. It doesn't appear that Mulugeta, whoever he or she is, has a first name of Mike. And yet that name, "Mike Mulugeta," was about to become notorious. But not at first. A single tweet references Mulugeta at the time his name was said on the scanner. A Twitter user named Carcel Mousineau simply said, "Just read the name Mike Mulugeta on the scanner." It was retweeted exactly once. In the unofficial transcript of the scanner on Reddit, at least as it stands now, the reading of the name was recorded simply: "Police listed a name, unclear if related." The next step in this information flow is the trickiest one. Here's what I know. At 2:42am, Greg Hughes, who had been following the Tripathi speculation, tweeted, "This is the Internet's test of 'be right, not first' with the reporting of this story. So far, people are doing a great job. #Watertown" Then, at 2:43am, he tweeted, "BPD has identified the names: Suspect 1: Mike Mulugeta. Suspect 2: Sunil Tripathi." The only problem is that there is no mention of Sunil Tripathi in the audio preceding Hughes' tweet. I've listened to it a dozen times and there's nothing there even remotely resembling Tripathi's name. I've embedded the audio from 2:35 to 2:45 am for your own inspection. Multiple groups of people have been crowdsourcing logs of the police scanner chatter and none of them have found a reference to Tripathi, either. It's just not there. .......... http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/04/it-wasnt-sunil-tripathi-the-anatomy-of-a-misinformation-disaster/275155/ It also makes no sense for the police to identify the suspects while they were still on the run. It is also clear that the name Mulugeta was not about the two terrorists but was something unrelated that was mentioned on the scanner.
seedhi Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 YES - I heard the name. That's where Miike Mulugeta comes in too.By the way in the thread about the hunt in which you were providing running commentary - in post # 341 you simply pasted the tweet by Greg Hughes (since deleted) about the scanner mentioning the two names. You did not at that time claim that you had heard the names yourself. This is your post # 341 in that thread: https://twitter.com/ghughesca/status/325137602661457920 http://www.indiancricketfans.com/showpost.php?p=2349305&postcount=341 This this what the article has to say about this tweet: At 2:42am, Greg Hughes, who had been following the Tripathi speculation, tweeted, "This is the Internet's test of 'be right, not first' with the reporting of this story. So far, people are doing a great job. #Watertown" Then, at 2:43am, he tweeted, "BPD has identified the names: Suspect 1: Mike Mulugeta. Suspect 2: Sunil Tripathi." Crookbond Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Seedhi, [1] It's not easy to understand Boston accent. The times when I could I just posted what I heard and there were times when I did NOT. [2] The times when I didn't or was less than 100% sure I went over and checked for confirmation. So yes, there are times when I heard something and was not 100% sure but looked for clarification from other sources (and cited those) - but I heard it and more than one person did. Mike and Sunil weren't the only instances there were others too. [3] Sorry but I didn't maintain any recordings. [4] That tweet is NOT the only source of those two names. You can search for other references as well including Boston local media.

In case you missed, all suspicious looking men/women for "suspects" including a 60 year old white male and a conscious person lying on the ground. In this game, you can't allow Type 2 errors.

For the Boston PD to identify explicitly by name the two suspects while they are on the run seems to me rather unusual, especially without any positive proof of id. The positive identification is done only after getting hold of the license or some other id. This is the way they eventually identified them as the two brothers - from the license etc that the older brother was carrying after he was brought down. By the way, I have not found any source claiming that Sunil Tripathi was mentioned on the scanner which predates that tweet of Greg Hughes which you quotes.

One person imagined he heard the name and then because of confirmation bias, the rest also seemed to somehow hear it. Those multiple twitter accounts and news sources where quoting the same source who got it wrong. There is zero evidence Tripathi's name ever came on the scanner and the actual transcripts prove it.

One thing I can now recall is that they might have referred to him as "Missing Brown Student" becuse he was a student of Brown Uni

seedhi Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 By the way, this is how some Indians were salivating at finding a "Hindu" link to the bombing:
Crookbond Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 @ Post #37, [1] Vidyut was being sarcastic at someone's tweet [2] Sunil is racially Indian but he is an American citizen.
nikred Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Another Indian celebrating: Desperate eh? Her stomach might have been aching a long time to use that term. She must be shattered at the latest development.
