Agreed. No ifs and buts about it. For all the shoutings that Indian fans manage to do we can all agree that we have never dominated the cricketing world, one of the reasons obviously being our performance outside India. And when we get a chance to create history in South Africa what do we do?? Sure we may still win from here but that would not be because of the performance of our batsmen, specially Tendular. He has had enough of "chances" to prove he was returning to his best and he has not availed them. Its time for him to go. BCCI or some senior players(maybe Sunny) should tell him politely, but firmly, that he has to retire. xxx

Point is after playing cricket for almost two decades he doesn't realize that playing sh!t like this will never ever help himself or Team.A quick fire 40 would have been far better than letting bowlers on top, spreading the epidemic of fear,eventually and inevitably perishing playing round the butt!

That may be true Shwetabh but what was he doing staying at the crease for 1 and a half hour(88 minutes), facing 62 deliveries and scoring 14 runs? That is ridiculous by any standards and in this test, whenever any batsman has scored 10 plus his strike rate has been better than Tendulkar's. I would not agree that a strokemaker like Sachin's role is that of a stone-waller in this Test side. Whenever he tries to don that responsibility he has failed, and also has taken Indian chances down with it. In his last 20 Test matches(not including Bangladesh) he has 847 runs@28. Surely that would have been reason enough for most lesser mortals to be thrown out, why a different rule for SRT? xxx

Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? There is this old saying 'fortune favors the brave'.Marginal/close decisions WILL go against you if show no confidence in your game. Its like offering no strokes on a regular basis will get u out the first time it hits the pad though outdside the line if there is a hint of in-swing.

Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? I've witnessed several innings where a batsman has started off scratchily and gone on to make a big score, most prominent would be Dravid's 270 at Rawalpindi. And how you can think of dropping the second highest scorer and average is beyond me. :shrug:

Indeed I have too. But when was the last time Sachin has done that? Not in this millenium as far as I can remember. See, Sachin plays best when he plays his natural game(for that matter most of the batsmen do that). He does not excel in playing the waiting game. I would not have cared as much if he had scored 14 off 20 deliveries, atleast he tried to gain the advantage for India would have been a fair argument then, but 20 off 62 deliveries? Thats just not done. As for the second highest runs and average surely that is greatly misleading. Assuming scoring 300-350 in a 6 innings series@50 plus is a decent showing, his performance of 199@33 is no great shakes(falls about 50% short). It is akin to a bowler taking 8 wickets in 3 tests@45(assuming 12 wickets at 30 is decent). Maybe not the right analogy but you get the point I hope. xxx

Sydney '04 was the last time when he scratched around and went on to score big. I have said this many times that he is not the same batsman he was and was a huge let down against Pakistan and England. However, in this series I cant really fault his performance too much.

Fair enough but thus far you have 6 batsman(3 from each side) ahead of him in sheer averages. Sachin has not really done anything better than these six bats in this series(Prince, Smith, Pollock, VVS, KKD, Ganguly). If tomorrow KKD gets dropped(which he will be if Dhoni gets fit), or VVS or Ganguly for that matter, why not SRT?

I would agree to that and I would also suggest that his performance, average everything has been falling alarmingly in the past 2 years. It has gone from career high 58 to 53 now. This comes at a time when almost every contempory batsman's average is on the up. Why spoil your legacy? Why hold on to a place when you are obviously not getting any younger? If SRT is gonna gives us 200 runs@33 why not pick a newbie who scores 150 at 30 and is being groomed for future? xxxx

Parth. That argument is heard only in sub-continent. I have not heard such sentiments coming from Aussies, everyone from Border, Healey, Waugh to now Warne/Mcgrath have been told to go, if they have not done that on their own. Regardless SRT may still be a force in LOI but I doubt he would get too many more chances in Tests as he has been played against Pakistan, England and now Saffers without too much grand returns. xxx

Sorry Anakin but there are no freebies in International cricket. He might have been injured or less than 100% fit(we can only assume unless we hear something official) and in that case should have come down the order. Yes its all hindsight and all but KKD would have been better up the order than an injured-has been- have scored under 30 for the past 20 Test matches. If people are upset/disappointed at SRT it is not due to a single match or anything. Like it or not SRT is sinking, and it is a very sad sight as an Indian fan...reminescence of how Kapil went.

Why would he grimace with pain so often during this innings? Yes, KKD might have been a better choice in front of him, but that's not his decision. KKD should've been kept as an opener for that matter. No one said he's the same SRT of 90s and it's not possible, and still he outscored everyone in the team except SCG in the series. If that's sinking, then let it be. Add to that the umpiring. But of course, join the gang. There has always been one scapegoat for everything going wrong in the indian team.

That is a typical victim mentality. The whole world is out to get you kind of a thing. There is nothing like that. As it happens I was just reading Prem Panicker's write-up about today's game. Have you read it? If not please check this out.

The main problem during this phase was Sachin Tendulkar, who looked remarkably out of sorts. He was hit on the knuckles by Kallis and on the elbow by Harris; he seemed uncomfortable against the rookie spinner's line of over the wicket into the rough outside leg stump; against the quicker bowler he kept playing and missing around off and, most importantly, the confident front foot play was in cold storage, with the batsman reverting to playing everything from the crease

Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? Malcolm Marshall once tore through the English lineup with one hand in complete bandage. He couldn't even move it and it is pretty difficult to bowl with one hand tied. If Tendu was indeed injured he should have come in to bat after Munaf.
