JOHANNESBURG: “It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up.†Legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi, who wrote these inspiring lines would have been proud of Joginder Sharma. India’s rookie pace bowler came back after being dealt the knock-out blow by Misbah-Ul-Haq in the last over of the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 Cup final yesterday. With Pakistan needing 13 runs, Sharma came under extreme pressure after Misbah-ul-Haq hit him for a six. But he did well to hold his nerve to send Misbah packing and India won by five runs. joginder2509.jpgIT CAME OFF: Joginder Sharma celebrates If there was one personality at the Wanderers Stadium yesterday who could understand the pressure, it was Wesley Hall. On December 14, 1960, the West Indies fast bowling legend was entrusted with the responsibility of bowling the decisive over with Australia on the brink of victory at the Gabba in Brisbane. Hall had to defend six runs off eight balls (it used to be eight-ball overs in Australia then) and the match resulted in cricket’s first ever tied Test. When MiD DAY caught up with Hall in one of the corporate boxes, he waxed eloquent on Sharma and said he would have bowled in similar fashion. “Sharma put the ball at the stumps — if you miss, I hit and that’s what you got to do. Pakistan had to get six runs in four balls, which meant the batsman still had to take a chance or two. Pitching it right jog2509.jpgWest Indies great Wesley Hall“He pitched the ball right up and that was the best thing to do in the situation. You have to be very skilful in what you do as the batsman will be very confident after hitting a six,†stressed Hall. Hall said the key aspect was that Sharma kept a cool head. “The secret of success in bowling the last over is to keep a very cool head and always make the batsmen play at the ball. “Don’t go too wide, don’t go too short. Pitch it up to him. A yorker length ball is nearly impossible to go over the top with.†http://www.mid-day.com/sports/international/2007/september/164557.htm

Joginder is the luckiest guy on this planet. His two-bit bowling got hammered in the semis by the Aussies but his ass was saved by some outstanding bowling by Sreesanth , RPS and Bhajji. He becomes the hero bowling the last over , when the match was already won. In the final against Pak , he bowls mostly crap but gets away with it because Pak batsman were under pressure. In the final over , he bowls a shocker of a wide first ball , bowls a short one to get hit for six and somehow Misbah manages to scoop a half-volley outside off-stump to fine leg. Man , this guy is one lucky dude !
