Selfish Vs Selfless batsmen in Indian team

This basic topic is still a very relevant one. Lets face it To give it some perspective, assuming one is discussing the issue in the context of ODI matches, the following game situations exist as a common factor in all games, just to define a framework for the topic. 1. Opening batsmen always get a chance to play 50 overs in a game, but middle order batsme don't always do so. 2. Field is up with all restrictions, but bowling is nowhere as attacking as as in test matches. Also bowlers striving not to spray the ball and settle in, don't try to get wkts as much. Scoring opportunities are much more with boundaries. 3. Whether a batsman is in form or not, as an opener he always comes in , gets to play 10 out of 10 times, and the required scoring rate is never going to be 7-8 etc, and all 10 wkts are intact. Batsmen opening can certainly take the time to settle and just with an easily hit odd boundary, may still get about 5 rpo, but still waste a lot of dotballs, and be under no immediate win or lose pressure, with almost 80% of the innings to go. 4. Middle order batsmen, may be in form for half the playing days, but still get only 7-8 overs to play and finish with 30-40 notout off maybe 20 odd balls, and no one notices or gives great credit. On the other hand the in form/out of form is taken out of the equation as far as available opportunity is concerned for openers. 5. Middle order batsmen always have to come in either at 20-3 and then build a big innings and still get us to 250-270 , or come in at 200-3 in the 40th over, and irrespective of form, have to go at 8 rpo or even sometimes 10 an over chase situation. 6. Scoring at 8-10 an over in the middle/end gives no room for settling down, greater field restrictions, a settled bowling attack, as well as the immediacy of a win/lose situation and much much greater pressure with rare and scant reward of recognition. With all of the above, the situation of the openers is much more controllable, less pressure, more opportunity, and much greater recognition and rewards. Proof is that almost all big scorers, renowned one day batsmen have been openers. Greenidge, Haynes, Hayden, Jayasuriya, Sachin, etc Any surprises that almost everyone would want to do the opener's job ? This will naturally breed players who do so for the wrong reasons sometimes. This is the key... the wrong reasons, not the team einning, but just self glorification. It need not be any particular selfish batsmen, but then it could be particular selfish innings and selfish interests at certain times. Openers can afford to be, but not middle order batsmen. Period.

Very true. In the same breath let it also be mentioned that the same players are not as prolific in Test cricket. The highest run scorers in Test cricket are almost always the batsmen coming at number 3 or 4. This excludes Sunil Gavaskar obviously. But look at other names - Sachin, Lara, Ponting, Border, Waugh, Inzamam, Miandad, Viv and many others. What is interesting is that Sachin opens in LOI but doesnt in Test cricket. This is surely not because he is afraid of failure or anything, he is too good a player to be bogged down, but it surely shows that he is more comfortable opening in LOI than Test. Not to mention the very simple fact that Sachin's career graph went through the roof once he started opening for India in LOI. So yes the openers always have a greater chance to score runs than other batsmen. xxx
