Binny, and the allrounder’s conundrum At the heart of it all is the third question, about whether a player with the general specifications Binny comes with is needed in the Indian team or not. Irfan Pathan was probably the last of the medium pace-bowling allrounders who spent any length of time with the Indian team. The preferred men in those No. 7 and No. 8 slots, more recently, have been Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin, both spinners, and it’s worked all right for India. But now things will change, or should change, because India play most of their cricket in the lead up to the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand away from the subcontinent. Irfan isn’t quite in the frame at the moment and the only realistic options India have for a non-spinning allrounder – a decent batsman who can bowl a few overs of medium pace or a decent pacer who can score 30-odd runs – are Binny, Rishi Dhawan and, possibly, Abhishek Nayar, keeping in mind the fact that Rajat Bhatia and Laxmi Ratan Shukla are past 30 and, therefore, not in the running perhaps. Realistically, it’s only between Binny and Dhawan then and, while Dhawan has the better numbers over the past few seasons in first-class cricket, Binny, clearly, is a step ahead of him in the race – he is in the Indian team and Dhawan is not. So, to my mind at least, Binny – at his all-round best – is definitely someone India should back. But what is it India are looking for? It has to be someone who has the ability to push either Jadeja or Ashwin out of the playing XI – when overseas – on merit. Unlike the Rajasthan Royals think tank, the Team India backroom staff does not appear to have that kind of faith in Binny. Now, it’s back to the IPL for him with hopes high for another good season – definitely with the bat, and perhaps with the ball too – one that could keep the selectors interested in him in the months leading up to the World Cup.
