I have 2 fans and both work........one is a lil slow but it spins. I tried opening it up and cleaned them a cpl of mnths back......
How long do you use it a stretch ? If it hours on end , surely it will get heated. Nothing bad about that. Just make sure your cooling vents arent blocked, you should be fine.

what sort of firewall, anti virus do i need to install on linux type distros, i.e what about on Ubuntu, (actually I am planning to use Kubuntu on my pentium 2 pc ). On a side note, I ran DSL(Damn Small Linux) live cd, on my old computer and it was super fast compared to the windows xp installed on it  For those trying out, I'd recommend that you first try live cd, where you dont have to install anything and you can take a test drive. -But I dont think I can seriously leave Winxp. Perhaps a dual boot should be good. (perhaps, this should go in a different thread, sorry bb, your thread's been hijacked :D

That sounds like the work of a spyware or a virus ... Take a look at these files and see if they make sense to you .. sort them by size and you should not see any large files... unless your friend views lot of streaming video. BTW how much Diskspace was recovered before it got eaten up ?
I installed my latest Symantec AV on it, and there were no viruses found. Anyway, i tried the temp file change you told me and that has solved the problem for now. If by streaming video, you mean youtube then yes...she uses it alot. Don't know what you mean by the question re; disk space recovery. If you mean the amount of disk space freed up after clearing cache, moving files around, compression, disk defrag, etc. then i'd say roughly 4 gigs. But that didn't really make a difference, 'cos all that space would slowly reduce over several weeks.
Preferrably, do it this way: 1.Back-up the data (shouldn't be that hard- if she doesnt have a DVDR, get her to send her files to someone else's computer on msn transfer- will take a day or two at most but nothing that overnight transfers wont solve). 2. Re-install windows and use its partition manager to partition the 12 Gb drive into 3 partitions : 1 6Gb partitions, 1 5 Gb partition and the last bit being 1 Gb partition. Use one of the 6Gb partition to be Windows home drive. 3. Reformat the 21Gb drive and designate it as media folder with NTFS file system. 4. Install ubuntu ( fairly easy- download it, then burn it as ISO on disk) and install ubuntu in the 2nd 6Gb partition ( 5Gb one). When ubuntu installs, it will ask you to pick the type of format you want for its home drive, pick JFS, since Ubuntu loves JFS paritition. 5. Format the 1 Gb one as JFS too and leave it as your JFS RAM overflow drive.
2 questions; 1. Why use a DVDR for backup ? What is wrong with a plain old 2 GB USB ? Is there is a difference ? Besides, how will the computer be able to read either of them if there is no space on the disk drive ? 2. What is a ubuntu and what is this thing for ?
Also try to uninstall all the known softwares as losing them wont be a problem, Like Yahoo, MSN, Google, Messagers, toolbars, WMP, RealPlayer etc etc. create some space. And only use C:drive to install some OS files rest should go on exter disk.
I have already tried doing that, yaar. This actually brings up another problem !! When the computer has very low disk space, you get a little bubble at the bottom right hand corner prompting you to compress files. Once you do that and the space is still low, you are prompted to uninstall "rarely used" files from Control Panel. I did that uninstallation with a few of her useless crap (ie; some CD burners, etc.) but when i tried moving applications like Yahoo and AIM Messenger (among others), out popped a message saying something along the lines of, "The programs may not work properly if moved". Sure enough, when i moved them all, none were working - so i moved them back. Now, when i tried uninstalling them the system restore wouldn't record the change ('cos it's suspended) so some of those programs would remain there. I have no clue what to do now. I could reformat the C drive, but then would't that erase everything ? She would have to install windows again, install the MS Office suite, etc. I may be wrong, 'cos i have never tried this. Problem is, several of those programs (ie; all of MS Office) are pirated so she can't install them again in the event that they are wiped out. This chick should be banned from buying, or even USING computers

2. What is a ubuntu and what is this thing for ?
Its a linux based operating system(distro) like MS Windows XP, or Vista. All of these linux distros are suppose to be better than Windows apparently. You can download most of these distros for free, and download a live cd version. In this method, you can boot from the cd, and there is no need to install it while you make up your mind whether you want to keep it or not. FMI, try http://www.ubuntu.com/ Theres actually another linux distro called Damn small linux. Its like 50 mbs and it can fit on a usb drive or you can boot from a cd rom, or even your current operating system. I tried this and it was super fast on my old computer(pentium 2, 400Mhz) http://damnsmalllinux.org/ Here's a good forum for general info about Linux. http://www.linuxquestions.org/ I am actually a novice in the domain of linux. Perhaps a more accomplished user can better explain.

Jebus christos Pred! Your friend needs not to be such a a tight @ss :haha: 10Mb free space on the C drive :hysterical: :hysterical: Tell him to run CCleaner to clear all his temp data. My 5+ year old 2nd laptop even has a 40GB HD! Tell your friend to come to 2007 :lightbulb: The OS must be angry with him for giving it so little space to breathe! 10Mb frees space :hysterical::hysterical: I have heard it all now :giggle:

Depends on how much data is there and how important it is. For starters your old 2GB external HD or flash drive has only 2GB space. With DVD burner you can burn X-amount of 4GB DVDs. My data is very important to me so this is how I do my backup PC -A ---3 x 500 GB internal HDs PC- B --- 3 x 500 GB internal HDs mirror all the data of PC-A External 1TB HD- Has some of the important and WIP files backed up on it. Note- Both PC ka OS is on independent 4th purely OS drives (WD 10k rpm Raptor drive) Then all the data is mirrored for the 3rd time on DVDs :D All data is work related and nothing to do with porn in case you are wondering ( for the record I don't possess even one porn file). Laptop I use purely for client demonstration and portability. Zero data is stored on it apart from whatever data I need to show.

USB backup works too-DOH! I guess i overlooked it,since i just prefer burning disks for backup. As per read either of them - if the computer can restart, it means there is enough free space on the drive for windows to load itself- then you just cut-paste into the USB drive If the computer is not starting, you need to do the F8 at boot, go into dos-prompt and copy your stuff from dos prompt. But from the sounds of it, you are better off just wiping the drives and doing a complete new reinstall
2. What is a ubuntu and what is this thing for ?
Ubuntu is a linux-based free operating system that comes with regular software updates and entire suite of custom-made softwares- like word/excel/notepad/photoshop, games, dvd burner, movie-maker, dvd player programs, etc etc- all for FREE. It runs way faster and better than Winblowz and you gotto be a real dumb tosser to crash Ubuntu- i am not a computer geek and i've had ubuntu for over 6 months now and it hasnt crashed on me even ONCE. Just one thing about Ubuntu- it gets rather pissed off if you shut down the computer mid-process by pushing the button on your computer for shutdown/restart. It f*cks up your GUI, so don't do it. Not to mention, Ubuntu is 10x more secure than windows and if you read the boards, you can change the source-code yourself to make your OS do whatever you want it to do- including setting up internal firewalls( if you are into the illegal download scene, it really helps if you got files downloaded into a folder with 4 firewalls protecting it, each 32 bit encryption). The only drawback of Ubuntu is that it cannot handle games- games are written for windows, which is practically the ONLY reason i keep dual-boot on.

Before any of you actually start wiping our your XP partitions - know that there are problems also with Linux. Like getting certain hardware - wifi cards and graphic cards - to interface with the OS. Its great if you know (or want to) learn how to use it though it may not be worth the trouble for some of you ...

not a problem with ubuntu, unless you are literally running the latest graphics card out there anywhere in the world. The ubuntu team THEMSELVES write hardware drivers for it and release it in automated updates every few days. So all you gotto do is wait a couple of weeks at most and your hardware is supported. And if your hardware is older than a few weeks (top of the line stuff) Ubuntu will most definitely support it. Besides, with ubuntu, you don't have to worry about the drivers- ubuntu takes care of it for you. Ubuntu automatically detects the hardware settings, logs on the net & get gets drivers for them itself, all part of the installation process. You don't even have to push a button.

These OS issues reinforces to me the eternal virtue of an OS like UNIX  too bad we just can't put an aircraft engine in a car

So Ubuntu is ideal for laptops? What about SUSE (which we use on the desktops at my work) or Red Hat?
Adi, dunno much about SUSE, though it seems to be pretty stable. A friend of mine runs SUSE on her system and it comes with less 'toys' but is apparently more flexible if you are into source-code manipulation. RedHat kind of sucks- their hardware support & OS update sections are seriously lacking, so you'd need to go hunt for updates yourself after sifting through mind-numbingly huge number of Redhat forums. Ubuntu is ideal for : 1. Anyone who doesn't use a Mac 2. Anyone who isn't a gamer. It works like a charm whether on desktop, laptop or servers.
