Ring Road work, PM route jam south Delhi

Monday morning traffic in south Delhi was thrown completely out of gear as two major works on Ring Road and outer Ring Road blocked both ends of the east-west stretch. The situation became worse during peak hours when traffic on Ring Road was stopped for at least an hour for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's passage. Traffic officials claimed to have put diversions in place but nothing prepared the city for the daylong ordeal. One of the reasons for the jams cited by the traffic police was repair work on a pipeline near Panchsheel Marg. A barricade has been put up blocking two lanes of outer Ring Road going towards Nehru Place from IIT. Traffic officials said DJB had sought 24 hours on Thursday for the repaired concrete to settle as heavy pressure of traffic on this stretch could rupture the pipeline again. Three days have passed since and vehicles are still forced to squeeze through the remaining two lanes. It took more than two hours to cross the stretch between Munirka and Chirag Dilli which usually is a 30-minute drive even during rush hour. "I was travelling from the airport to Greater Kailash and had to crawl through the traffic for over two hours before I could find a free driveway. The situation was exacerbated by buses stopping to pick passengers," said Sumanta Dey, an MNC executive. Traffic officials said that a diversion was already in place at Ring Road due to construction work on Moti Bagh flyover. But by afternoon, tailbacks were reported from both Lajpat Nagar and Nehru Place. Later in the day, traffic police issued an advisory asking the driver heading towards Nehru Place to take the Panchsheel Marg-August Kranti Marg route or the IIT-to-AIIMS route through Aurobindo Marg. But by this time traffic jams were being reported even from the Gurgaon border. Thousands of vehicles were stranded on NH-8 and at Dhaula Kuan, Ring Road and outer Ring Road. The gridlock worsened after traffic police stopped vehicles on NH-8 for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's convoy to pass. "Though the road was closed only for a few minutes, traffic pressure multiplied," said a traffic police officer. Police officials said that the situation might remain the same until one of the roads is made available for free traffic flow. A reminder has already been sent to civic bodies to stick to deadlines
