What if someone is about to die in a field hospital and wants a religious authority to talk to in their final moments?
Wouldn't they be trying to source one from the local places there? For that reason alone, don't think we need to have the army keep full time pastors/maulvis / poojaris.

And are people expected to stop being religious once they are deputed to say the border?
Why stop at that? Why don't send some prostitutes also with them? AFAIK sexual urges are primal and more important than religious needs ain it? So why expect people to stop being human once they are deputed to the borders? See, they are soldiers. They are paid and trained for something. They are aware of what they are going to miss.

How can you allow random localites to interact with the army?

It is not a 9 to 4 job where they come back home at the end of the day. What if they are deputed for months and wanted to do a puja during a festival ? It is not possible for the army to meet the sexual needs of all its men and women. That's why they get leaves once in a while, but religious needs are easier to meet even if they have a few priests for thousands of soldiers. People who kill or get killed more often than ordinary people need both their religious and psychological needs met. That's why they need priests.

Dude?
What dude? You can't let anybody walk into army encampments just like that don't you?Even if that were allowed, how sure are you that local priests would be ready to risk themselves in war zones to read the last rites for soldiers? they might not even speak the same language or follow the same customs as the soldiers in a particular regiment?

priests lead prayer sessions in armies all the time especially during festivals. The only thing stupid is you trying to make an argument against what is a common practice in armies all around the world.

How and why are sexual needs of army men relevant here ?

What the army needs are good psychologists and educated people who know how to keep them motivated' date=' and not priests.[/quote'] Educated people and good psychologists motivate people??? Who was the last PHD or shrink who motivated you to do/not do something? Historically, armies have been motivated by religious talk and iconography. And in a vocation where the chances of getting killed/maimed are high, there is obviously a need of those who can provide the men with any kind of solace. On topic: Do you (anyone , not you particularly) think saying "Jai Hind" is anti national and sends a message of religious hatred and extremism?
