Yuvraj Singh should play for Punjab Ranji Team

Recommended Posts

Now that he is not in the playing XI...he should make himself available for Punjab Team.. that way he can show..his form and temperament in longer format of the game.. or he is insecure about it.. somehow i feel some of he young "stars" of Team India..feel superior about themselves..and discard Domestic matches.. there was a directive from BCCI that players not in XI should play for their respective state teams.. sehwag is back in delhi team... i think Yuvi too should play in Punjab team.. he must show that he can score big runs in domestic matches..in the longer format of the game.

The last time he played for Punjab was back in 2004/05 ... since then he rarely makes himself available for it. If he had a mountain of runs game after game in Ranjii ... like Phil Jaques was doing for NSW, like KP did for his domestic team. Its no use whinging about Yuvraj not being given an opportunity to play in the Test team, if he is not trying to put more pressure on the selectors by churning out a mountain of runs in domestic form. On away tours, he has few options as he is the 12th man most of the time, however, here we are during a home series ... he could easily say to the selectors ... "Look, I want to go back to play for Punjab in the Ranjii Trophy and score some runs in the 4-day format. Can you please grant me that?". I doubt they would say "No! We need you to carry the drinks". If Yuvraj is not doing that, then Badrinath or Tiwary deserve a spot ahead of Yuvraj. I am not agreeing with Chappell here but it is worth noting that when asked about Yuvraj he did say ... "The problem with Yuvraj is that he thinks he is a star, when he is only a rising one". I am not agreeing with Chappell, but it is just something to note, the next time someone criticises the so-called ego of the "Big 3". Remember that Dravid went back to Ranjii trophy and scored runs ... never once whinging about being dropped.

Dravid went back to ranji because 1) He was not in the squad 2) He was asked to do so by the selectors No such case for Yuvraj singh.

Why not? That is the question! This is the new policy of BCCI: The Cricket Board has decided to send players who don't make it to the eleven in the Test series against Pakistan to do duty for their respective Ranji Trophy teams, but has not thought it fit to inform the media. The decision of the BCCI that only those players who make the playing 11 will remain in Delhi tomorrow when the first Test against Pakistan begins and the others would be released to join their respectively state teams was revealed to the scribes here by Delhi Ranji team coach Vijay Dahiya. Dahiya said that Ishant Sharma, the lanky Delhi pacer who has been drafted into the first Test squad by the selectors along with Munaf Patel as cover for R P Singh and S Sreesanth, if he's not in the Test eleven. "He was all set to come with the team here for the tie against Mumbai (in Ranji Trophy Elite Division group A) when we got the call that he has been drafted into the Test team. "I specifically spoke to Lalchand Rajput (team manager) whether Ishant will be released for the tie if he's not in the eleven and Rajput said he will reach here first thing tomorrow if he does not make it to the playing eleven as per the decision taken by the BCCI," said Dahiya. Interestingly, the BCCI has chalked out its Ranji Trophy fixtures in such a way that each of the three Tests against Pakistan starts a day before the commencement of the third, fourth and fifth rounds of the national championship, to enable players not in the eleven to be available for domestic cricket.

Exactly ... this is now a common policy in many countries . The BCCI has set everything up for this ... why isnt Yuvraj playing for Punjab. The only reason I could think of is that he feels that if he goes and plays for Punjab and does badly he will harm his chances whereas if he is around the squad he is a chance. Yuvraj needs to put his ego aside and go play Ranjii trophy for Punjab. A few big scores will certainly improve his chances.

Yuvraj should be playing for India team! Indian selctors and has beens like dada and laxy should put their egos aside and make way for Yuvraj!
When Ganguly didnt get picked he went to go play domestic cricket. When Laxman didnt get picked he went to go play domestic cricket (even recently he was playing in English county) When Dravid didnt get picked he went to go play domestic cricket Sachin when he was coming back from injury in 05 and 06 played a few games in domestic cricket. Even Sehwag when he didnt get picked went back to go play domestic cricket. If Yuvraj is as desparate to get a Test spot as he says he is, why isnt he going and playing now. The BCCI have put a policy in place whereby people in the squad who are not in the team can go play for their domestic team, and they have arranged the schedule of Ranjii games so that they co-incicide, so what is he doing? The excuse of he is 12th man isnt a legitimate excuse anymore because he can now play. Even world-crickets biggest ego in Kevin Pietersen, who in late 04-early 05 , after some impressive ODI performances like Yuvraj, wanted a spot in the Test side. However, unlike Yuvraj, at least Pietersen whilst stating how much he wanted to play Tests, was playing for Hampshire, where he scored a couple of centuries. This made it easier for the selectors to pick him for the Ashes. If Yuvraj really wanted that Test spot, he would be playing for Punjab in the 4-day format and scoring some big centuries to prove to the selectors he can bat long innings. However it seems he would rather sit in the dressing rooms doing nothing and complain that he is not being given a chance. Right now, I would not be dissapointed if Badrinath or Tiwary were the next 2 to get a look in because at least they are consistently performing in the longer-version. If Yuvraj can prove me wrong, and go play for Punjab and make a statement by scoring some runs, then he has every right to complain about not getting a chance but right now all he is doing is sitting in the dressing rooms doing nothing.

Ganguly has a FC average of 43 and is in the team and was captain, so dont get your point! Yuvrajs average will shoot up while dadas is only going one way and thats down!
Ganguly also has a bowling average of 36 in first-class, while Yuvraj has an average of 59 with the ball. Ganguly's value with the ball should not be under-estimated as every team in Tests now has a part timer who can get through a few overs (Aus - Symonds, Eng - Collingwood, NZL - Styris, etc). He is especially important when we are only picking 4 specialist bowlers.

Ganguly's series averages in his last 3 test series ... SAF - 42.8, BAN - 42.66, ENG - 49.8 ... his average in England should have been in the high 50's had it not been for some shocking umpiring decisions. How did you decide that his average is going down? :hysterical:

A FC average of 42 indicates he is not cut out for the longer format and he is trying to hide that by carrying drinks and being our reserve middle order batsman.
i had no problem with yuvraj back in 2004, when he didn't get picked and actually was sent by the selectors to play domestic cricket - iirc, he smashed tons in both innings of a duleep game for north zone, after which he got a few chances in the side. that was 3 years ago though, and his first class and test record since has been fairly inconsistent. bharat makes a very good point. when Jaques didn't get a go, he smashed runs and runs for NSW. when he got a one-off test and was dropped, he went and smashed more runs for his state, then murdered some county attacks in the off-season. kept doing this over and over again, and eventually the selectors picked him. going back to domestics and working to make runs has been done by ganguly, vvs, dravid, jaques, clarke, owais shah, martyn, katich, amla, gibbs and a sh*tload of other players to help their game and cases for selection. is it too much to expect poster boy to do the same, when far bigger stars and finer players than he have done it, and often with great success?

Yuvraj's FC average is 43.66 and Gangulys 43.74....so its the same. and if gangulys bowlign average is better than yuvraj in domestic, yuvraj sure brings edge in fielding. and maybe yuvraj should have been asked by the selectors to go play ranji or should have made himself available but that doesnt make a diff. Its not his performances that are under the scanner but the fact that middle order is occupied by old warhorses laxman and ganguly.

YUVRAJ SINGH - WORLDS BEST LIMITED OVER BATSMEN - AYAZ MEMON High time Yuvraj got his due in Tests Ayaz Memon Saturday, November 17, 2007 03:05 IST Over the next few days, new Test skipper Anil Kumble will be stroking his square jaw in serious strategizing — if he is not already spending sleepless nights. He is confronted with his first dilemma much before the first ball is bowled in the three-match series against Pakistan which begins next Thursday. Can he afford to keep the world’s best player in limited overs cricket out of the five-day game? Over the past four months, I believe, Yuvraj Singh has upstaged the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Matt Hayden, Sanath Jayasuriya, Herschelle Gibbs, Chris Gayle, Jacque Kallis, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and even Adam Gilchrist with his sensational batting. This is how he compares with these leading lights (in terms of runs scored, average, strike rate) He was the key figure in India’s Twenty20 World Championship triumph, and the brilliant form has spilled over into the ODIs against Australia and Pakistan. He may not have scored the most runs in this period as those mentioned (as the table above reveals), but it is his daring strokeplay and strong finishing which marks Yuvraj out as exceptional. Add to this his outstanding fielding and useful left-arm spin and you have a multi-faceted match-winner. But is he good enough, Kumble will be asking himself (and a few others surely), to break into the Indian Test team which has Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman at numbers 5 and 6? Problem for Kumble, of course, is that the answer to such dilemmas is not clear-cut. There are arguments that work both ways, the most potent being that a great one-day player need not necessarily be a great Test player. For instance Michael Bevan, widely regarded as the best ODI player of his time, struggled to make it to the Tests, and Australia were none the worse for this. He was perceived to be suspect against genuine pace — just as Yuvraj is thought to be vulnerable to spin — and other players were preferred. However, two other splendid Aussie batsmen — Adam Gilchrist and Mike Hussey — provide the counter argument. Both used their prowess in the one-day game to earn their stature, and have since gone on to become outstanding Test batsmen too. Gilchrist is arguably the best cricketer of his generation, never mind if Shane Warne did not even include him in the top 10 in his recent list. Hussey, who has been in Bradmensque run-getting flow, could well be the next. Kumble’s decision will have to be made on hard-boiled assessment. He has, by all accounts, been given a short lease as captain, which can be extended if he produces results. How much can Yuvraj contribute to his cause is the question. I believe he is batting at his peak and brings a degree of dynamism which the team could do with. But I am not ready to dismiss the class and experience of Ganguly and Laxman so easily either. Kumble’s dilemma, alas, must be his own. I wish him well. http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1133636

KAPIL DEV - YUVRAJ WORLDS BEST LEFT HANDED BATSMEN Yuvraj should have been in the Test team: Kapil Dev JAIPUR, November 21: Surprised by the selectors' decision to leave Yuvraj Singh out of the team for the first two Tests against Pakistan, former India captain Kapil Dev on Wednesday said it was unfair to omit the 'world's best' left-hander from the side. "It is surprising to see Yuvraj is not there for the first Test match. The way he is playing his cricket presently makes one thing clear in everyone's mind that he is the best left-handed batsman in the world presently," Kapil said. "In his absence, others who have been given a chance will have to play with extra responsibility as his absence means all who are present in the squad are better than him," he added. India take on the arch-rivals in a three-Test series starting in Delhi from on Thursday. On being asked about the need of a new coach for the team, Kapil said, "What is wrong in Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh? They are doing their job well according to me." "The 11 players who are playing international cricket for India are already trained. But, you do need a manager. Sometimes even a player like Sachin (Tendulkar) may feel low and in such circumstances you need to have managers who are known as coaches in cricket these days," Kapil said. On Indian cricket team's chances after the 3-2 ODI series win, Kapil said, "I think the Indian team could have stopped Pakistan at 4-1 by winning the final match in Jaipur. But when the result is 3-2 with Pakistan winning the final One-dayer, naturally the morale of the Pakistani team is high." "As far as our team is concerned presently it is looking good on paper. But it all depends on how well they execute their plans on the ground. The better team would win," he said. Kapil, who is the chairman of the Indian Cricket League's Executive Board, rubbished reports that Brian Lara was planning to sign up with the Indian Premier League. "I think any player who has given us a committment through contract will come and join. If he does anything wrong he would be his personal loss than loss of ICL. As far as I am concerned he is coming." On the board's diktat of not allowing chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar to write columns, Kapil said, "I think as a player any cricketer can write a column if he wishes to. but I don't know what are the norms in BCCI. if there are certain norms related to this matter, Vengsarkar should decide himself to follow them or not." http://cricket.indiatimes.com/Yuvraj_should_be_included_Kapil_Dev/articleshow/2559272.cms

Yuvraj should take bowling seriously to be in Test team: Sohail PTI NEW DELHI, November 22: Former Pakistani captain Aamir Sohail on Thursday joined the debate over Yuvraj Singh's exclusion from the Indian Test team, saying the middle-order batsman needed to have an edge over other contenders to cement his place in the side. Despite hitting match winning knocks in the recent One-day series and the Twenty20 World Cup, Yuvraj could not find a place in the playing XI for the first Test against Pakistan, but Sohail said the team management was not at all unjust to the Punjab batsman, who has played only 19 Tests since his debut in 2003. "It's right that Yuvraj is in a purple patch, but to cement his place in the Test team he should have an edge over the other players like (VVS) Laxman, who have performed and proven themselves," Sohail said. "The only way he can have an edge over others is by taking his bowling seriously. He has to tell his captain that he was taking his bowling seriously to increase his value in the team. Otherwise, he has to wait till the others start failing," he added. The 41-year-old cricketer-turned-commentator praised the 118-Test veteran Anil Kumble, who is captaining the Indian team for the first time in his 17-year international career. "He looks completely in charge. He has experience and it looks he knows his team well. He has been really good in his choices as he a gave chance to (Sourav) Ganguly before the lunch break," he said. "The selectors are right in grooming (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni under him. It will also give Dhoni some time to grow and develop for the top job, especially in Australia." On the team combination of two spinners and two pacemen, he said "it was a very good combination for the team" but added that Pakistan were also right in playing only one specialist spinner in Danish Kaneria on a slow Feroz Shah Kotla track. "You need a paceman to produce reverse swing after a stage and Shoaib Malik has rightly picked three paceman," he added. http://cricket.indiatimes.com/News/News/Yuvraj_should_take_bowling_seriously_to_be_in_Test_team_Sohail/articleshow/2561633.cms
