How do you like it? Do you think you get good quality like you used to get from your conventional home phone service provider like Verizon, AT&T etc? 2. Have any of you supplied VoIP phones to your folks back in India? How does this work? I hear people give VoIP phones with local area code calling numbers to folks back home? Is this legally allowed??? 3. Any other things to be aware of?

THX_1138 Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 i have been using Vonage for about three years since september 2004 and i am quite satisfied with the service. infact, my parents in india have a vonage adapter too and for $14.95 a month i am able to talk to them indefinately (in retrospect not the brightest idea ever).

Any other things to be aware of?my parents in new delhi have a houston texas number and thus i can call them from any number in the united states for a local (or long distance depending on where i call them from) for no additional charge and so can they. moreover, for any residents of bangladesh, there is a new feature from vonage that for 10 bucks a month you can call any number in bangladesh for no additional cost. of course india being a cash crop for long distance, dont expect any such facility for india. i would however give you a word of caution: vonage has been embroiled in a legal battle with verizon telecom since the former used the later's development: Voice over IP without proper licensing. though vonage has managed to have a stay order issued against a decision to close down all vonage service, it is not likely that the matter will be resolved anytime soon. nonetheless, if verizon does win, the cost of the service might be bumped up a bit since time warner's service (which does not hold a candle to vonage) is about 39.99 a month.

It uses a proprietary protocol that is intentionally obfuscated. Most other VOIP providers use standard protocols like SIP. If you buy a Skype phone it will only work with Skype and you won't be able to change to another provider.

You should be able to find a Windows or Mac Compatible software SIP phone easily. Try this: http://www.openwengo.org/ It's free and open souce, compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux. Should interact with any other SIP compatible software phone as well.
