Sri Lanka’s aging batting superstar Sanath Jayasuriya will announce his retirement from Test cricket during the first Test against England which will get underway at the Asgiriya Stadium next Saturday, according to a very senior member of Sri Lanka Cricket. He said “Sanath is due to make this announcement during the Test match in Kandyâ€. One of the explosive batsmen that the cricketing World has ever produced made his Test debut against New Zealand at Hamilton, on February 22 1991. However he made his mark on the field of cricket during the 1996 World Cup pairing off with wicket-keeper batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana taking pinch hitting at the top of the order into a new height. He was chosen as the most valuable player even prior to the end of the series. http://www.sundaytimes.lk/071125/Sports/sp218.html

Why the exclamation marks ? It's not as if he's 25 years old. He hasn't scored a Test century since October, 2004. In 26 innings since, he's topped 50 just once. Sanath has been a great ODI player, bat & ball, for many years. Certainly had his moments in Tests - his 340 in '97 comes to mind - but, with an average of 40, was a good batsman, not a great.

This baldy killed us in the 2 tests in 1997. 340 in the first test followed by a 199 in the second test. And in the ODIs, he used to bash the Ind and Pak attacks for fun between 96 and 00. Despite my intense dislike for the SL team, he's one of the three SL cricketers I have liked, the other two being Aravinda and Sanga.
