The decision to pick up a value in the range is taken up by an algorithm designed by humans.

Of course, in a free market you need regulators - that' the whole point of the FCC, FEC, FERC, FMC, FTC etc. in the USA.

Because of men who blame the victims. Go ahead...start the blame game.Which one of her victim should not have done what to avoid being raped.Bloody effing people blaming the victims. No one is making an excuse for the guy. my point is that we know to EXPECT such things for a woman in india and that is the harsh reality and wont go away anytime soon. despite all the protests and hullaballoo in india and internationally over the last year or so the numbers haven't gone down at all! so why not be extra cautious? ofcourse these guys should be punished and actively targeted even before they get the chance to do such acts but at the same time caution should be exercised byy the individuals themselves. sexual harassment is an issue in the country and until conditions improves, personal steps need to be taken too. its like you have your guards up and avoid shady areas at night in order not to be robbed. In an ideal world one should not have such fears and the police should be trusted to ensure that but we are not in an ideal world and take precautions as a result.
AmreekanDesi Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 ONE THING I don't understand is: That Uber and all these apps have a rating system where after EVERY ride one gets the chance o review and rate their experience ANONYMOUSLY. And going by accounts even whe nthere wasn't a rape, there were a lot of harassment issues which one would think would have led him to have a lower rating and eventually get filtered out. So any update on why that didn't come to work in this case and to some extent atleast raised a red flag?

Their people have written the code. They define what 'surge' is and I am sure that is configurable. For eg, today surge may be when 50% of the taxis are in use. Tomorrow they could modify it to 40%. It is all opaque. This gives some indication of what taxi travel will be if Uber manages to drive the local taxis out of the market. With Fast Track etc, I at least know how much I will have to pay. Uber can set the price as high as they please any time they want and say that it is the 'algorithm'.

That is when you book the cab, not when it arrives ? Slightly better in that case but I would still argue that taxi is far more an essential item that aeroplanes.

Uber has to perform its business, it is the government's job to tend care in emergencies. You can ask them to drop their surge pricing during emergencies but if there's no law the max you can say is that Uber is treading thin moral lines.

Please do not take their word this company is known to make mockery of any type of rules and privacy ... They at some private event in company were literally tracking some person with so called God mode in their system and making fun ... at-least they are upfront .. a normal taxi walla would blackmail you and it won't be reported either.
