No call logs No driver background check No GPS
Which auto/taxi has this in India? I am a bit confused....Don't people take an auto/taxi etc every day in any metro in India? What call logs? What driver background check? What GPS? Forget India...I was in London and other parts of UK for many years...I never had call logs for black cabs or any other cabs, I never knew of the driver and there was never any GPS.... Who are we trying to blame here? Uber? Why?

As per latest evaluation Uber is $40 Billion company, they should follow necessary security arrangements. Yes we cannot blame Uber for everything but basic security systems must be their responsibilities.

Most mnc companies don't follow the same guidelines in India which they follow in western world. Remember a few years back coca cola was implicated in cases having adulterants in it. A few days back there was a case of worms in subway burger and the store owner didn't even apologise. Uber is at fault here. Btw not to generalize still why in most of these acts ppl from Bihar and up are implicated. There must be some underlying cause.

There have been concerns expressed about the lack of safety in uber's services from around the world. So it is not just in india. Google search uber + safety+concerns, Totonto wanting to kick out uber is the first headline you find.

GPS installation is mandatory for taxis playing in NCR. Uber didn't conduct background checks too. Soon, GPS will be mandatory on autos in NCR too. I am not blaming ONLY Uber.

Uber name is being dragged more than it should have been. A limited that Call Taxi-Auto service can do for such cases. This I am saying from my experience of setting up a call-auto service in one of the metro of India. It is extremely difficult for radio-taxi/auto companies to enforce GPS tracking in their vehicles even though they need it, not only for security purposes, but also for optimized scheduling of their trips. Whatever instrument you put in their vehicles, they would disable that in case they get their own trip or passengers or they just don't want to take trip. I don't know what system Uber uses but it wouldn't have been impossible for taxi driver to turn that off. I think in this case what all call taxi company can do is to provide call logs and booking details to police. Radio taxi company would always have details like which driver took that trip and I believe Uber already shared those details with authority. Beyond that company owners can just do the basic background check of their drivers I don't know how effective that could be. You can just collect some ID's and can ask them to submit some of the documents. When we had set up this call-auto thing, we always took possibility of these incidents as one of the very high risk area and did our best to cover ourself so that we as company owners are not dragged into these cases and I am sure Uber would have done enough to safeguard themselves.

In case of Uber, during the trip the phone has to be always ON since that's how they calculate the distance AFAIK. The disconnection of GPS should be like an Early Warning System. In any case, the key problem with Uber is that they haven't gone through background checks in India like they do elsewhere. Unlike in the West, Uber does not conduct background checks on drivers in India http://scroll.in/article/693621/Unlike-in-the-West,-Uber-does-not-conduct-background-checks-on-drivers-in-India

True. But then it can act as a reasonable filter to ward off suspicious guys. Also good references must be made a must.
In the end as owner of call taxi business, you are looking to put a fleet on the ground. If you are not finding enough people you start relaxing your rules and criteria.

India taxi rates are still very low as compared to worldwide or even auto rickshaws.
