shortbread Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I know Gabba is where India traditionally goes to get plummeted, But I think there is hope this time. I am not high, but give me time to explain. On July 17th 2014 India played against England at Lords, at one of the greenest tracks we have played on recently. Cricinfo's comments were 'Just saw pictures of the track, enough grass there for a herd of cows.' Conditions might have been even tougher than the Gabba, overcast, not just bounce but movement as well, and arguably the best opening bowlers in home conditions, Anderson and Broad. India won that test. The main reasons were: Our 1st innings: - We did not play nohit - Rahane played the innings of his life - Bhuvi, Shami and Ishanth piled on 70 odd runs with the bat India made 295 Eng 1st innings: - Bhuvi took 6 wickets at an economy of 2.6/over, bowling 31 overs. Especially got the top 3 cheaply England made 319 Our 2nd innings - Nohit did not play - Vijay did what he does best, bore mankind to death!! Played 247 deliveries, but got out when he neared a century as always. But killed the new ball in the process - Decent opening stand, 40 runs before the 1st wicket fell, Dhawan made 31 - Tail clicked again, Jadeja 68 & Bhuvi 52 India made 342 Eng 2nd innings: - Ishanth took 7 wickets in a short ball barrage - Bhuvi piled the pressure bowling a miserly spell at 1.3/over, although wicketless Eng all out and India win by 95 runs. The Positives: - Our batsmen especially Vijay, Rahane and Pujara played well against what is arguably a far better bowling line up. At Gabba, apart from Johnson the rest are inexperienced. Johnson will be a handful but the threat is highly over rated. - Gabba will be far friendlier in the second innings which we can capitalise on. - At Lords our middle order failed miserably, Kohli, Dhoni and Binny were dead ducks. Hopefully they will perform better, especially Kohli is in the form of his life. - Australia have a fragile batting line-up, something the daft bowling on a dead track could not expose in the 1st test. Hopefully this time we wont give Warner the start he's looking for. - Addition of Ashwin will hopefully strengthen the batting Negatives: - Bhuvi isnt playing - HUGE BLOW - Nohit is playing - BIGGER BLOW (I don't like him, never did, never will) Weighing all the options it is not as dreadful as many make it out to be. Our biggest challenge is the inability to take 20 wickets, sincerely hoping the wicket helps. But the likes of Shami and Aaron need to bowl to a plan rather than spray at the batsmen in the name of 'aggression'!! A lot rides on Vijay killing the new ball, followed by Pujara, Rahane and Kohli. Anything Dhoni, Nohit and Ashwin bring are a bonus. This is the most fragile Australian side India will ever face at the Gabba, if there was ever a chance......

But i totally agree with you. We would have won adelaide had the others stepped up but our bowling is costing us. In NZ, we fell short by 40 odd runs 1st test. Had the bowlers got their wickets.... all we need is wickets, the batting will be there to score with this young talented lineup. I would consider dropping dhawan if he fails this test.

If the Indian bowling line up is struggling to take wickets, then they need to pile pressure, batsmen like Warner, Smith will get restless after playing dots. U cant do both, last test they were toothless and went for runs. We need discipline, if one bowler is going at 5-6 an over then its pointless. I hate what Aaron did the last test, he was so convince just putting it there at pace will do the trick, it wont. I want him to play again, this time to focus on the stumps and bowl tighter. The batsmen will struggle the first innings, until and unless the top order fire. I expect Dhawan to go for it, its pointless him trying to defend. If he and Vijay can stick around then that is very good news. The dark horse is Rahane, the boy is made of grit.

Harris and Siddle are out. Dropping Siddle after struggling on a dead pitch was a poor call I thought. I mean no disrespect, but Anderson and Broad in English conditions on a pitch with bounce and seam movement is a different kettle of fish. Australia have a talented but inexperienced attack. The issue is Smith has a choice of plenty and will simply keep rotating bowlers and hope Johnson delivers the goods. This isn't the toughest bowling attack India have faced.

Siddle looked totally out of sorts. Agree the pitch didn't offer much, but he looked tired and worn-out and never gave the impression that he was going to get a wicket But given the inexperience, Johnson appears to be the only threat. All lies in the hands of Vijay to bore him to death. Saha or Ash at 6 instead of Rohit makes total sense

Harris does it. Both are/were brilliant at testing patience and bowling that channel. Greatest example is mcgrath. Our bowlers have zero brains or we are slowly getting there hopefully with a new coach. It just makes me turn the tv off seeing toothless bowling. Yh dhawan either over attacks or over defends. He is a matchwinner but unproved in tests. 1 more test and thats it imo
