THX_1138 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I am trying to setup remote access on my desktop so that i may access the machine from my laptop. i am using windows XP sp2 at the moment (used Vista before but it came me ulcers). at the moment using the guide listed on the microsoft website, i have succeeded in accessing my desktop from my laptop only when i am connected to the same subnet mask, i.e. they are both connected to a common router. does anyone know how i may be able to do this from a remote location? i have completed the whole bit about port forwarding on the router, permissions etc etc. my problem is that when in punch in ip address of my desktop on my laptop from a different network, the login page does not load up! any suggestions? better year does anyone here have a guide that i can follow? and another thing... i am trying to set up a VPN connection between my dad's computer in india and mine. are there any sites that provide a free VPN connection that i can use? again a guide or something would be of immense value. please keep in mind that my expertise is not in this field so you might have to point me towards a guide that holds my finger and guides me through the maze.

THX_1138 Posted December 9, 2007 Author Posted December 9, 2007 thanks Aditi but the first link requires me to have a VPN remote access account (observe step number 8!). This is the very step i am trying to circumvent. can i set up remote access on my home desktop without using a VPN gateway (i.e. just use my desktop as a host and connect to it using its IP address which is assigned by a DHCP server, but i can find out the IP address even when away from my desk). as for the firewalls, the ones i run are the ones usually supplied with my anti virus package (i use PC cilin). must i shut that down too?
Aditi Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Are you just trying to get your home PC connected to your personal laptop? If that is the case, you dont need VPN for that. VPN is for accessing your company network from your home computer and you need that access account from your work's network administrator. What you would want to do is simply create a home network.

What you would want to do is simply create a home network.[/quote'] i am trying to access my desktop from a remote location. setting up a home network is quite frankly trivial in comparison. what i am trying to achieve is a remote desktop connection that i can access from, like it says "a remote location", in particular one that is not on the same sub net mask. i.e. connected to a different router at a different location, such that the two gateways (the one through which my home machine in routed, and the one through which my laptop is routed) are different. a lot like the "remote assistance" feature in MSN messenger...

coffee_rules Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 You could also try tridia VNC software. You will have to run the server on the office desktop. Run a client on your laptop and access all of your office desktop.
