Kalia_Test Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Little background To refresh, UN Security Council has 5 permament members - US,UK,Russia,China and France. These countries have veto power. The UN Security council itself has these 5 members + 10 non-permanent members ( with 2 year terms AFAIK with 5 retiring each year ). The idea is that every region is adequately represented and it is in some way achieved through the non-permanent members. 4 countries called G4 - India, Japan,Brazil and Germany have formed a lobby claiming their right for a UNSC permanent seat Brazil - 5th largest country by area in world and will represent South America Japan - One of top contributors to UN, big economy and balance for China Germany - One of the top contributors to UN initiatives, big economy India - Second largest populated country in world, decent contributor to UN initiatives and representation of HUGE South Asian population. I used to track this actively earlier and from what I remember - US,UK,France and Russia are OK with G4 position and have no issues. Even China is OK with India but they want India, Brazil, Germany to break away from G4 i.e they don't want Japan ( for obvious reasons ). As expected, Pakistan and a few others have formed a "coffee club" to oppose India but they dont matter much. My thoughts and questions 1. G4 should get permanent membership. 2. Africa needs a permanent member too. Which country do you think fits the bill? Should be mature, stable - South Africa? 3. Muslim nations need a permanent member too. Which country would you suggest? Turkey is what I feel. 4. Australia and NZ need not be permanent members as their interests are aligned with US,UK. Agree? 5. Should Modi Govt make it a priority to get into UNSC? Does it really matter that much? We have seen China veto the Lakhwi issue ( so Pak has indirect representation thru China. Does India really have anyone to represent us currently? )
