10-year-old picks up 5 wickets playing senior level cricket

While most cricketers find it very hard to claim five wickets in an innings, sometimes even striving for that elusive 5-wicket haul throughout their career, 10-year old Thomas Wrigglesworth achieved the feat, that too playing against a senior team, ABC News reports.

What is even more impressive is the fact that it was his first match as a bowler playing for his club Sale against the senior Stratford club over the weekend.

Thomas is the son of a former Victorian state cricketer, Ian Wrigglesworth, and incidentally it was his first time bowling leg spin. The 10-year old’s incredible spell read, 8-3-9-5, which completely stunned the senior team. His proud dad was impressed with his feat and said that he had tried spinning for the first time after his previous stint with wicket-keeping. 

“He was a wicketkeeper last year and he’s just decided the leggies were worth a try and pestered everyone enough to the point where he was given a bowl and he’s been able to land them. He played his second game in the seniors, and bowling his little loopy leggies he got five wickets,” Ian said. 

The young sensation revealed his dad had a big role to play in his achievement but attributed his success as a spin bowler to his older brother. 

"He's a good dad, he teaches me a fair bit cricket-wise. I was a keeper but now my brother taught me how to bowl leg spin, so I tried that for one game and it worked,” a proud Thomas told 774 ABC Melbourne.

Asked whether it was safe to be pitting children against men, the senior Wrigglesworth said: “We do try and actively integrate the juniors in with the seniors. We have a program in place whereby the captains are asked to protect and give the boys opportunities where it’s warranted. It is quite a controlled environment.”

Ian added that Thomas was used to playing with kids much older than him, especially his elder brother and quipped that the family was more concerned about his performances than the safety aspect. 

“Thomas is a little bit different. He’s the youngest of four kids and his oldest brother is nearly 18 and that’s his playmate, so he’s used to playing with older kids. We were more inclined to talk about the duck he made in the morning. We’re not going to pump him up. But yeah he probably needed to work a bit more on his running [between the wickets], he got run out,” Ian said, as reported by Fox Sports.
