If Ponting had not selfishly played for his 50 in the second innings at Hobart' date=' Kallis would have been number 1.[/quote'] Was he playing for his 50, or for another milestone? He didn't declare exactly when he reached his fifty. He declared just when Murali conceded 400 runs for the series, taking his average to 100 per wicket. :hysterical: [btw shwetabh, you have v/m]

Bowling. 1. Murali 904 2. Ntini 808 3. Steyn 775 4. Clark 769 5. Lee 726 6. Bond 724 7. Kumble 702 8. Pollock 701 9. Hoggard 700 10. Akhtar 684
That made me do some legwork to see if bowling has really deteriorated over the years. Here are the ICC rankings on the same date (21th November) since 1977. 70s(1977) 1. Lillee 2. Bedi 3. Thomson 4. Underwood 5. Andy Roberts 6. Mike Holding 7. Bob Willis 8. Bhagwat Chandrashekhar 9. Imran Khan 10. Max Walker 80s(1987) 1. Richard Hadlee 2. Malcolm Marshall 3. Imran Khan 4. Ewan Chattfield 5. Kapil Dev 6. Maninder Singh 7. Wasim Akram 8. Geoff Lawson 9. Graham Dilley 10. Abdul Qadir 90s (1997) 1. Mcgrath 2. Ambrose 3. Mushtaq Ahmed 4. Donald 5. Warne 6. Akram 7. Bishop 8. Streak 9. Walsh 10. Waqar Some of these players obviously are in their for a great year or two(example Maninder or Mushtaq Ahmed) but by and large the list is symbolic of the decade. Must say that the top 10 of 70s, 80s and 90s all look more formidable that what we have in 2007. xxx

that is exactly the reason why i rate any batsman from 1989-2007 better, Hence sachin EASILY bails as the best batsman than ponting or lara. Ponting from 03 was awesome cuz of the bowlin from other sides otherwise he is not even great.

Some good research Lurker. The state of fast bowling has been pitiful for nearly 5 years or so now. The top 10 from 1987 and 1997 is simply awesome! Oh what I wouldn't do to have Donald,Wasim,Ambrose,McGrath,Warne back. :(

And BLee too. How did he' date=' with his mediocre test record, get to number 5?[/quote'] Most of the regular bowlers (other than the standouts like Murali, Pigeon, Warne, Pollock etc.) who average in the high 20s to low 30s are usually somewhere between 10 and 30 in the rankings. Very good performances over their most recent 3 or 4 Tests can see them jump into the top 10. Brett Lee has done precisely that. His last 4 Tests produced 28 wickets. 6/82 & 6/114 in the 4th. & 5th. Ashes Tests and 8/112 & 8/169 against Sri Lanka. That's 28 wickets @ 17.07 - far from mediocre. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Others ratings of interest, with the Oz/Ind Tests coming up: Batemen. 11. Ponting displaced from top batsman in ICC Test Rankings Some wonderful batting by Sangakkara led him to the top spot in the ICC Test Rankings India may have been forced to settle for a draw in the second Test against Pakistan but the trio of Wasim Jaffer, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly can take heart from the fact that the Kolkata runfeast has pushed them up in the ICC Players Rankings. Thanks to his double century in the first innings and a half century in the second, Jaffer jumped 17 places to 23rd, his career-best rating. Ganguly, who notched up his maiden Test ton at his home ground and missed a half century in the second innings, also moved up four places to 24th, while Tendulkar climbed a rung to be 17th in the list. 6wwjo8g.jpg
