Yes, he is a journalist with keen interest in cricket. He supported the return of Kevin Pietersen with anti-ECB tweets, etc.

why did he have to face lee....was it a open challenge or something or  was it a personal rivalry kind of thing ?

England batsmen were performing poorly during the winter Ashes series (Nov 2013). England eventually lost the series 0-5. Piers Morgan was an outspoken critic of the Eng team and made condescending remarks that he could bat better than the English batsmen. He kept on mouthing about this and challenged the Aussie bowlers to take him on. Channel 9 (Australia) seized up the opportunity to organize this stunt, during the tea break of the 4th test at MCG, in front of 2000 spectators. It was supposed to be entertainment and fun, but Bret Lee bowled fiercely because of the condescending banter.

 

Richard Hadlee had warned that this stunt was unnecessary and dangerous. Sure enough, Morgan got multiple bruises and a fractured rib. Many enjoyed the spectacle, others not so. Hadlee wrote a scathing article against Lee, describing the incident as "a brain explosion of the highest order" which left him "appalled and outraged". "It was a deliberate attempt to hit, injure, hurt and maim his opponent that I viewed as a form of grievous bodily harm or a human assault that could have proved fatal," Hadlee wrote.

Looking at the video , it indeed looks very immature and dangerous. Lee at least should have understood that.He should not have gone for bodyline bouncers.

The environment was also very hostile with everyone against this chap.

This is what many critics felt. Morgan wanted to be courageous and had questioned the courage of the English batsmen against the onslaught of Mitchell Johnson. Lee was asked by reporters later what he thought about the critics. He didn't say anything, but his manager later said that Morgan  wanted Lee to bowl at him with full force, otherwise it would have been a farce. Morgan was then praised for his courage after facing Lee.

 

But this goes to show how amazing the skill of international batsmen is, especially the top ones, who regularly face bouncers and intimidating tactics from pacers. The reaction time is so less !!!

Yup was thinking the same while watching the videos...When he can bowl like that 6 in 6 an over...the batsmen had there work cut out.It looks almost impossible to judge the ball and play a short in that quick snap.

Good lesson to anyone who criticizes international players when they fail. It is not easy to be out there in the middle facing the music.
