Nationwide tax raids on IPL owners begins Agencies Posted on Apr 21, 2010 at 18:07 | Updated Apr 21, 2010 at 19:01 New Delhi: Trouble for owners of IPL teams and franchise commissioner Lalit Modi is growing. The offices of three teams were raided and owners of another team summoned for questioning--all that in a single day on Wednesday. Income Tax officials on Wednesday raided the office of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the IPL franchise owned by actor Shah Rukh Khan, and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) in Kolkata. There were simultaneous raids on the offices of Shah Rukh Khan-Juhi Chawla-promoted Red Chillies Entertainment, which owns KKR, at Eden Gardens and then on Gameplan, a sports management group which looks after KKR's affairs, on Shakespeare Sarani, a posh locality of South Kolkata. The seven-member Income Tax team first went to the office of KKR and then to the CAB at the Eden Gardens and examined the papers. Four members of the team then went to the office of Gameplan. "The income tax officials are here looking for papers related to IPL. We are cooperating with them," said a personal assistant to CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya. Dalmiya was scheduled to hold a press conference relating to IPL in the evening, which was subsequently postponed, he said. Earlier, summons were issued to the BCCI by the Income Tax authorities to furnish complete details of all eight original Indian Premier League franchises. KKR is one of the teams in which Modi is believed to have hidden stakes. Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab are the other two teams in which he is suspected to have hidden stakes. Income Tax officials have also searched the Chennai officer of India Cements, the owners of Chennai Super Kings. In Chandigarh, the promoters of the Chandigarh IPL team, Kings XI, have been summoned by a court on April 27. The team is part-owned by actor Preity Zinta. The Registrar of Companies in Chandigarh has complained that the team's promoters are not sharing their balance sheets or details of their accounts. As part of the inquiry into the source of funds of all IPL team-owners, the Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax officials are conducting detailed checks on the financial transactions of all teams. An Income tax team of 400 people has been set up for nationwide raids and investigation. (With inputs from PTI)
