Twenty20 final amongst 10 most viewed sports event in '07 PTI NEW DELHI, January 16: The ICC World Twenty20 Cup final between India and Pakistan was the 10th most watched sports event on television during 2007, according to a Viewerstrack global trends report. The grand finale between these two arch rivals was watched by a total of 40 million people across the world (average 20 million), putting the game amongst the league of other highly watched sports on television such as American football, soccer, F1 racing and tennis. "Even though 2007 was the inaugural year for this event, it still nevertheless beat the ICC World Cup Final between Australia and Sri Lanka in the TV-viewing stakes," a 2007 ViewerTrack global trends report published by Initiative, Lintas Media Group said. The unique appeal of the Indian team to cricket fans and also the success, which Twenty20 cricket had attracted millions of fans to the sport, the report added. "The shorter form of the game telecast at the prime time enabled office goers to come home and enjoy a night of good fast paced cricket, even a busy person like Shahrukh Khan could see an entire game," Lintas Media Group Director Media Services Lynn De Souza said. This clearly lead to a bigger pie for cricket in the global eyeball game, De Souza added. "Leading the audience choice was the NFL Super Bowl, even though more than 90 per cent of its global TV audience came from one single country - US, it is consistently the worlds most watched TV sporting event in odd-numbered years," the report said. While, NFL Super Bowl with a total of 142 millions audiences topped the most viewed list, Formula One - Brazilian Grand Prix was ranked second and UEFA European Champions League Final between Milan and Liverpool was the third most cited event last year. Initiatives global sports consultancy division, Initiative Sports Futures, has published its 2007 ViewerTrack global trends report, ranking the worlds most watched live TV sports events. No wonder, 20/20 is the way forward. Whether we like it or not, the sport is always for the people and not the other way around. 20/20 has all the makings of being an amazingly popular global sport. It lasts for 3 hours, full of action and there is hardly a dull moment. I think it wont be long before 50 overs ODI will be scrapped.
