Lurker Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Picking up from the topic that kind of started in Cricket section. Do you think young generation today is more confident than previous generation? And how has that impacted India? Is it more positive? Is it negative? Both? Let me go first. I do think the young generation is more confident but I am not sure if that is different from any successive generation anyway. I mean 2 generation back most of our ancestors had some connection with village(many still do). The Generation that came afterwards moved into town for education etc., so there was of course a change in outlook, specially with meeting people and it must have added to confidence as well. In our generation small town wallah moved to large town. So in some ways it is all a natural progression. Feel free to contribute any idea, anecdote etc. here.
coffee_rules Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I feel you did a U-turn of sorts. Didn't you say the confidence comes out of a trashy sense of nationalism? I agree with your post here. There is a change in mentality which we need to accept it and let the world know to accept the change. The Harbhajan saga and the fan reaction was justified in the way the process was followed. The MR gave out the sentence on hearsay evidence. With Ponting beating his chest out claiming that it was proven who played without spirit based on that decision, the only option left to the Indians was to stage a walk-out.
Lurker Posted January 30, 2008 Author Posted January 30, 2008 I feel you did a U-turn of sorts. Didn't you say the confidence comes out of a trashy sense of nationalism? No. My answer in that post had strictly to do with the way Indian cricket fans have increasingly become jingoistic about India. How Indian players are seen increasingly as one who can not make mistake and so on. This blatant clean chit is what has appaled me. The confidence in GenX is something different. I would elaborate with an example. Ten years back when an Indian IT person came to US it was not unexpected for him to work say 10-12 hours a day, often on weekends too. It was done not because Americans wanted it, but because Indian companies were finding their feet and the employees did hard work to create an impression. Today a newbie coming to West wont do it. In some ways there is no need to do the extra work, in some ways they just dont do it unless there is an incentive in it for them. The two issues are not one and the same. xx
fineleg Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Lurker, Can you post a URL to the thread where the original discussion started...Thx.

King Tendulkar Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Whats wrong with being jiginostic with regards to the indian cricket team. Its a bit of passion for your country. International sport has replaced war in many peoples mind for confrontation with other countries. Good thing is no one dies!

King Tendulkar Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 dsr, sport is sport. pls. dont say sport has replaced war for confrontation. thatz not even funny! sorry if it soundz harsh. What do you mean not funny. Its a fact and a good thing. As all countries need idenity and victory in battle. This is a basic human fact. So instead of wars to conquer others we know have international sport. No one dies and everyone has a good time. Its all good if you ask me. Maybeyou prefered it how it was 400 years ago when battles and victories in war were needed to keep the masses happy
Lurker Posted January 30, 2008 Author Posted January 30, 2008 Whats wrong with being jiginostic with regards to the indian cricket team. Its a bit of passion for your country. International sport has replaced war in many peoples mind for confrontation with other countries. Good thing is no one dies! First of all I am pretty sure you have misunderstood this thread. Your comment about passion, indian cricket team etc etc should have gone inside that cricket post that is being referred here and not in this post which deals with Gen X. Secondly what/how is passion defined? You can not cover up your goof-ups by claiming it is simply an act of passion. Sorry doesnt work that way. To me a passionate cricket fan would do: 1) Follow every, or atleast most, cricket game no matter what. 2) Live, breath cricket. 3) Spend his money buying cricket memorabilia, reading on past greats, creating a collection of his own etc etc. 4) Stick by his team even when odds are down. Your sense of passion is downright jingoism where you equate sports with war yada yada. You should perhaps spend some time reading cricket literature and maybe you will understand what CLR James meant when he said - What do they know of cricket who cricket only know? Alternatively you can start getting jingoistic again! xxxx
talksport Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 IMO Generation X in India is buzzing because of economy , employment , opportunities, security in life etc......especially from PV Narasimha rao's period of early 90s
fineleg Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Thatz true talksport. I think the job opportunities are good and thatz the primary reason. Today ppl are very confident they can get a good job that payz them well. That givez a confident outlook.

What this about goof ups and covering them with passion. No idea were you came up with this from. As for jigonism with war maybe your intellect did not understand what I was saying. It is not the same as war. Simply man needs coflict and that tribal grouping. This is clear from the history of man to the date zero. Thus if people now display this through sport instead of trying to conquer other lands then this is no bad thing. I for one feel great passion for my country. Lurkerl does not have that same passion and does not like patriotism for india. It is very clear why! Also the young in India are nore patritic and pasionate anc confident. Nothing wrong with that. India will be a lot more successful and prosperous with this attitude.
fineleg Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 ^^ :hysterical: Being jingoistic abt sports != patriotism Thatz a silly concept
King Tendulkar Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 ^^ :hysterical: Being jingoistic abt sports != patriotism Thatz a silly concept Its one of many collective things to show patriotism. Not the only thing nor did I say the only thing! Mnay people dont like sports so of course it is not relevant for these instances
fineleg Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Even if you are into cricket (and u being an indian) and you support Aus, that does not mean you are not patriotic. It means in that sport you choose to support Aus. Thatz all. You can be a citizen of one country but choose to support another country when it comes to sport. Thatz perfectly alrite.
talksport Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Even if you are into cricket (and u being an indian) and you support Aus' date=' that[u'] does not mean you are not patriotic. That is Bull $hit.....
fineleg Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 ^^ itz not BS talksport. itz perfectly acceptable to support whichever teamz u want in sportz. The majority may support the team from their country, thatz fine too. The bottomline iz thiz is sportz (entertainment) and not war. And thatz the point some are not understanding. You have some fun and entertainment, no "hatred" type enemity in sportz. (heat of the moment thingz happen, thatz understandable and thatz not what i'm referring to here)
talksport Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Assuming you grow up in your country....NO it is not common to support which ever teamz u want in sport against your Home country.... On the contrary it is perceived as unpatriotic or traitorship ( an english man supporting germany in football or an Indian supporting Pakistan in Criket...when plaing each other) IMO Patriotism is not just about fighting for your country in war.... Its putting national interest above your personal interest in defending you country and making a small sacrifice be it fiinancially , physically , morally or even giving your time for the country ,its people, its culure etc..
suma25 Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Assuming you grow up in your country....NO it is not common to support which ever teamz u want in sport against your Home country.... On the contrary it is perceived as unpatriotic or traitorship ( an english man supporting germany in football or an Indian supporting Pakistan in Criket...when plaing each other) so i guess the desis supporting india while india are playing against england australia south africa in their home ground are traitors as well
