New Delhi: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was released on bail on Wednesday evening hours after he was arrested on the charge of promoting enmity among groups. The court of the metropolitan magistrate in Vikhroli granted him conditional bail after he furnished a bond of Rs 15,000. The court barred him from speaking to the media or a gathering of more than four people. Raj’s lawyers held a lengthy argument at the court against the restrictions but the magistrate told the MNS chief that he would be sent to judicial custody in case he refuses to follow the restrictions. Raj was arrested from his Shivaji Park residence at around 1615 hrs IST on the charge of promoting enmity among ethnic groups by using invectives and provocative language over the presence of north Indians in Mumbai. He was charged under Section 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153A (promoting enmity between groups on the basis of places of birth, residence etc) 153D (assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 117 (abetting the commission of any offence by the public) of the IPC. Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi, who has been booked under similar charges, was arrested from his Colaba home and released on bail by a court in Bhoiwada after some 30 minutes. When Raj, nephew of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, was taken from his heavily barricaded home in a police van, MNS workers opposed to the presence of "north Indians and took to the streets in several parts of Maharashtra and attacked vehicles and shops. A Mumbai police team of 16 senior police officers and over 200 personnel arrived at Raj's residence at around 1230 hrs IST. After he got bail, Raj came out of the court and waved to his cheering supporters but didn’t make a speech. Sporadic violence has been reported from Mumbai and elsewhere in Maharashtra. A man died when a bus belonging to the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) was set on fire after being heavily stoned near Nashik town. Raj on February 3 had criticised migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar calling them "outsiders" in Mumbai. This provoked clashes with Samajwadi Party supporters led by Azmi. Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said police had taken the correct step in arresting Thackeray."Law will take its own course," he said, adding that Raj's arrest has shown that the state government will not tolerate acts detrimental to peace and harmony in the state. Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said the arrest has shown that Maharashtra government will not let anyone take law into their hands. Earlier on Wednesday morning the police arrested MNS state General Secretary Vasant Gite as a preventive measure. Gite, a former Shiv Sena leader, was one of the first to join MNS when Raj left the Sena and formed his outfit. Three other leaders of MNS were also taken into preventive custody. The police had detained dozens of MNS workers since Tuesday night in anticipation of trouble in the event of Raj Thackeray's arrest. The MNS state secretary, Vasant Gite, was also arrested in Nashik on Wednesday morning.

I know the Shankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi personally well for 30 odd years, and he had told me several times that BT always had the HIGHEST regard for him...now we all know that Sri Jayendra ( probably the most popular/politically active Sankaracharya in India, on all issues), is a Tamilian and if BT had no issues with him, is he still a S Indian basher ? Sri Jayendra has a HUGE following in North India , in UP , Gujarat etc...he was always a lead figure in the Ayodhya issues, now would he support someone like BT who was totally against N Indians/S Indians etc ?? I will make it real simple for you - 1 ) Raj thackeray targeted north indians in mumbai to further his political base - Was the modus operandi criminal ? My answer is YES and I agree with Sandy and DR that he should be criticized and legal action must be taken against him. 2)Bal thackeray targeted South indians in mumbai to further his political base in the 70's- Was the modus operandi criminal ? My answer is YES and feel that legal action must be taken against him. Sandy and DR conveniently ignore this dirty past and actually started eulogized BT in this thread . What part of this post by Sandy is not clear to you , I promise I will fill in the gaps .. It's disgusting to see that he is from the same family where Hindu stalwarts like Bal Thackeray who defended Hindu dharma without caring for their own personal "image" also hail from. We can't blame Balasaheb here since Raj Thackeray has defected from his uncle and formed his own party.

Yea , wel most of them agree with what raj thackeray has said as in abt the migrant issue but dont agree with the way he has gone abt doing it . After today most of them see it a s big tamasha with people and city and state held to ransom. the migrantt issue is big ..The common refrain if you ask' marathi manoos' even before this was" Bhaiyya lokani mumbaiccha wat lavoon takla aahein" . and to some extent raj's thackeray' arrest might be seen as victory of north over maharshtrians... Dont go by what media says mumbai was never tense ever in the last week or so aprt from dadar and marathi dominated areas that too only for the one or two days and today in the evening after thackerya got arrested. the media has hyped this into a much bigger issue then it really was and given thackery bhau and samjwadi party unecessary publicity .Raj bhau has certainly benefited out of this and made an ass of shivsena . media says its mili bhagat of cong/ncp /mns and raj bhau is the next bal thackeray:nervous:

Yes Raj Thackeray does seem to have extracted a good political mileage from all of this and in the power struggle of young brigade Uddhav may have to settle for second best. Then again that has always been the case.

Tell that to poor North indian taxi driver , or the South Indian Udupi owner ....

Uddhav Thackrey didn't say anythign which each and every state doesn't have in its constitution whereby they bar/limit other state resdients through domicle requirement in job application forms..

I knew he was from UP/Bihar when I saw his long chuttiya(read that word correctly ). His accent only confirmed it. At the end of the journey, he discounted the price saying 'Hamaar gaon ke hi to hai aap. Aap se kya lain" :two_thumbs_up:

The saddest thing in all of this is the feeling these people must be undergoing. When we spoke the first thing they would always say is that they felt more safe in Bombay than Bihar, no casteism ka locha no faltoo jameen jaydaad ka maara-maari. And now see how the wheel has come full circle! The most fun used to be with small hawkers like veggie vendors or dhobi. Woh sab to dam bhar baat karta tha. Bombay mein you buys veggies by pav(250 gm), so Gobhi 7 rupiah pav. Ek paav mein kya hoga? Ghanta??? Lekin yeh hero sab humko double deta tha :D Speaking of paav, do they still follow that typical small town measuring standards - chataak and kanwa :D

Aaj IBN mein there was this article about how a migrant woman gave birth to a kid in train since she and her family had to flee Mumbai at the very last time. :((
