Apparently Mike Tyson was so broke after his trial that he bit off some other boxers' ear due to a hunger pang. Even though you meant that tounge-in-cheek,he lost his prime years due to that conviction and he was literally "hungry" to reclaim the dominance and success he had in his prime...yes it was a desperate move. This was a guy who used to knock people out with one punch in 20 seconds,he just didn't have it any more in his comeback
