Ponting is mediocre?

I knew it would happen for obvious reasons, was just trying to make a point on why this thread should be closed. If I made a thread like this against Sachin in an Australian or Pakistani thread, I would be shot down by anybody active in the forums. It would also be closed because of it's stupidity. I wonder why the mods haven't done anything about this thread for 2 years.
Whats this obssession evryone has for closing down threads???? I mean its a thread discussing the merits of a batsman on a crciket forum and people want the thread locked.:((

You are not discussing his merit, you are just ranting and making ridiculous statements. This thread doesn't deserve to remain open. The threads like BossBhai's are good because he actually has good reason. You just like to scream PONTING IS A FTB.

Anything about Imran Nazir more talented than Sehwag Butt more than Gambhir Or may be why Afridi is a legend and even bigger than Kallis and Dravid? dont even talk about the lunacy of Pakistani forums.

Well have given many factual stats in this thread which you have ignored instead you scream of the injustice of criticising ponting. Ok so I will repeat some of the facts for you to reply to. 2007 he averaged only 38 2008 he averaged 47 2009 he averaged a pathetic 38. 2010 he averages only 44 This is a shocking run of form which shows he is past it and this rubbish batting is simply over looked. He should be under presurre with this poor batting but is not mysteriously. Also stats indicate FTB, as he has flopped in India with shocking average of 20 and considering over last decade we have been aussies main rival this is the bench mark of how good he is. Just like the bench mark for others is how good they are against aussies. He also has mediocre form in England in up were he barely averages over 40. Thus seems he struggles against spin and seaming ball.

Ponting is slowly removing his shoes. He is looking for a nail in his living room wall to hang them up. Wonder how long will the Aussies tolerate him? Out of curiosity if Ponting loses this series against Pak -- is he out of captaincy ? Or is Ashes still the benchmark for all Aussies ?

If he loses Ashes he won't be captain anymore.

Australia doesnt have too many options right now and Ponting hasnt been as good as he was few years ago but he isnt bad enough to be dropped. BTW Aussie captains usually retire if asked to let go of captaincy. IMO he will quit after Ashes or the WC .. but if he ends up losing ashes at home then its almost certain that he will be asked to step down

I'd disagree there, Desi. Agree that Ponting is in the twilight of his career, maybe 1 - 2 yrs top as a batsman, and current batting leaves a lot to be desired, but the use of selective statistics and selective bumping (that too after becoming the second highest scorer after Tendulkar, oh what irony ) has convinced me this thread is just attention seeking and an excuse for dsr to have his usual rants.

I think KT has a point ie Pwnting isnt as good as he was before and during his career he hasnt done too well in India .. whether he is now mediocre or not is his opinion. He has a right to put his point across and if someone disagrees then he should debate the topic .. not ask for the thread to be closed Its very easy to ignore a thread or a poster .. :icflove:

So you are telling me -- losing the Pak test series is perfectly fine with Selectors ? That is very funny, to say the least. Do the know your rankings will take a BIG tumble if you lose to Pak?

but australian public wont care much if they lose to pak. Lot of noise will be created if they lose ashes back home in australia.

he may not be what he used to be but mediocre is certainly not the word to describe that.

Not that it would be fine with the selectors, but I'm sure they would understand that he's done a great job for us and wouldn't drop him one a one off series. The Ashes is the pinnacle and changing captains so close to it would be silly, we need to give Ponting another chance to put things right. If he fails, then he'll be gone (as captain).

Ponting is a shadow of himself now. Even his ever-verdant pull shot does not seem to be pinging in front of square as is its wont. Instead it goes towards fine leg. He has become slower. No doubt about that. And I have never been appreciative of his captaincy. In fact I consider him to be among the worst captains in world cricket.

Aussie fans are assuming that he'll quit Test cricket after the Ashes this year, and ODI cricket after the WC next year. Aussies in general aren't crazy for cricket, hence it looks likely. Here in the sub-continent, players live and breathe cricket. If a sub-continental player were in Ponting's place, he'd give his best and try to return to form, something Dravid did for 2 years and eventually found back his groove. And that's mostly because cricket is a huge part of their life, specially when they represent their country for a long time (10 years or more). But the players from outside the sub-continent are different. Cricket don't live and breathe for the game, although they give their 100% while they are a part of the team.

Nice attempt SJS50' date=' but sadly without much merit. Ponting has been a FTB throughout his career, there is no yo-yo or whatever going on.[/quote'] No, he hasn't been an FTB. It's true he has struggled in India, but every great player (bar Bradman) has his flaw. Warne was pathetic against, and in India, that doesn't take anything away from him. We Indians need to give Ponting his due, he is indeed a great of the game. Having said that, he doesn't compare to Sachin though.

i dont think any Aus captain has continued as a player after losing his captaincy so dont see that happening with Ponting either. He will be forced to retire
