He averages 12 when touring the best team he has had to face in is era. Just like players of now are judged how they do against aussies in oz and players of 70s and 80s were judged how they did in windies, so aussies must be judged how they do against the toughest tour for them in cricket. This of course is aginst India the 2nd best team of this era. He averages a pathetic 12 in India, so he is clearly not that great! And quite possibly a FTB!

He scores more than 50 in tests and more than 47 in ODIs outside australia. What do you want above 90 each time to call him brilliant. Who are you comparing him with Sachin?

Averages only 42 in england and 12 in India. So does not like seaming/swinging tracks or turning tracks. Thats it I am convinced now. PONTING IS A FTB!!!

Ponting has played one, yes ONE test match in India since 2001. His career record from 1995 to 2001, 1995-2001 52 83 11 3182 197 44.19 His record from 2002 to 2008, 2002-2008 64 110 15 6594 257 69.41 If you still dont get it, in the time when he has been his MOST prolific, Ponting has played just one test match in India. You conveniently forget that and label him "mediocre" based on stats from a time when he was just a good batsman.

well we'll just have to see how he does in India this year....if he fails one more time then he probably won't be called a legend of the game. And by succeed i think he only has to average 35 over 4 test matches, with 1 100 atleast. But given how he's played Kumble and Bhajji at home on this trip..he seems more spooked then ever.

It is pathetic to label Ponting as mediocre. Ponting is the best number three of this generation. He just happened to have a poor series against a very good bowling unit on difficult tracks.

Hiis technical flaws have been exposed there. He has serious claims to being the ultimate FTB. And he has not even had to face the mighty aussie attack. I suspect Mcwarne would have had him all over the shop.

A poor average in India was largely down to a trouble with the primed Harbhajan Singh whereas he averages 42.63 in England.

Even though I don't agree with dsr's assertion that Ponting is mediocre, I do agree that if one of our batsmen had such a shocking record in Australia(averaging 12 from 8 tests), each and every Indian fan would have been railroading the guy for this. And no great batsman in this era or the previous one had such a shocking record anywhere.

Why would i rate Tendulkar better than Lara.. because Tendulkar was more consistant than Lara.. Lara made big hundreds thats why he has a good average but in 10 inning Tendulkar would have made significant contribution in 7 where as lara would have made in maybe 5 So all said and done Ponting is a mediocre or above average batsman by virtue of playing in a team with the best bowling attack and against some forgettable attacks...

Ponting isnt as good as Lara or Tendulkar but it must be remembered that Ponting is as good as ANY against quality fast bowling. He boasts a superior record than Lara or Sachin ( far superior actually) facing the best bowling attack aside from Australia for most of the 90s/present decade- South Africa, which had Donald, Pollock and several very good seamers. He also has an exceptionally strong record facing Wasim-Waqar. Overall,i'd rate him below Lara-Tendy but in the same bracket as Dravid-Sehwag.

Gary Sobers averages 15 in NZ in as many tests. Infact barring Bradman, i expect most great batsmen to have one such flaw in their resume.
