Can we please get a designer spin pitch at Ahmedabad?

Look, when we tour Aus or SA or Eng or NZ or even Pak, they are not going to give us spin friendly pitches. AK and HS/other spinner will always have to slog it out. The only place we can give some (unfair and delicious) advantage to AK/HS/others is in bloody legend country INDIA! :) Get a designer spin pitch for next two Tests, let AK sign off in glory against SA, and we'll have them (SAFfies) crawling on the pitch. No need for green, bouncy - Dale Steyn friendly - pitches at this point. Our own pacers will get the pace friendly pitches when we tour Aus or SA or Eng or NZ. Our spinners will NEVER get spin-friendly-design in any of those countries. Lets give it to AK in India atleast! He toils everywhere else anyway! PS: Main reason _ let AK get the help. Secondary reason - dont let a raging Dale Steyn lick his lips on a pace friendly pitch. Let him lick his lips in SA, and we will counter it there with our own I.S., RPS, ZK, SS battery.

Sporting track promised for 2nd Test As both Indian and SA teams criticised the Chennai pitch for the 1st Test, the pitch at Motera remains the talking point, reports A Karhadkar. More... Motera curator promises sporting track for 2nd Test e5a0146f-b533-4476-b39a-cfae05a9c255HiRes.JPG#@%23@%230 Motera curator promises sporting track for 2nd Test : Curator Dhiraj Parsana (far right) has a word with his colleagues at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium, Motera, on Monday. The ground, on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, is the venue for the second Test between India and South Africa starting on Thursday. Amol Karhadkar , Hindustan Times Ahmedabad, April 01, 2008 First Published: 02:05 IST(1/4/2008) Last Updated: 02:17 IST(1/4/2008) Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Neil McKenzie and Hashim Amla turned out to be the heroes in Chennai as runs flowed from their bats in the first of three Tests. However, there was one factor working against the bowlers – the pitch. The Chepauk track just did not have anything in it for any bowler throughout all the five days. Both the skippers – Anil Kumble and Graeme Smith – criticised the pitch after the match and hoped for a balanced contest between the bat and the ball in the rest of the series. It is learnt that Smith has heavily criticised the strip in Chennai in his report to the match referee Roshan Mahanama. As a result, as both the teams move to Ahmedabad for the second Test, the pitch at Motera remains the talking point. And the 22-yard strip in question bears a look exactly opposite to the one in Chennai. When both the teams reach the stadium for training on Tuesday, the bowlers’ eyes, especially that of Ishant Sharma and Dale Steyn and Co., will light up at the sight of the grass at the centre. On Monday afternoon, the pitch had a tinge of live grass on it, something which was missing in Chennai. And if Dhiraj Parsana, the curator, said the grass cover will remain even when both the captains walk out for toss on Thursday morning. “I can assure you that it will be a sporting track,” Parsana told the Hindustan Times on Monday. “There have been no instructions to prepare a specific pitch and my job is to give a sporting track.” Parsana, a former Test cricketer, explained the logic behind keeping the grass cover. “There is a vast difference between the weather in Chennai and Ahmedabad,” Parsana, who is also heading the West Zone wing of the BCCI’s Pitch and Ground committee, said. “In Chennai, due to high humidity it feels too hot even when the temeperature is between 30 and 35 degree Celsius. But here in Ahmedabad the ground temperature has already passed the 45-degree mark and with the dry conditions, if we don’t keep grass on the wicket, it will crumble on the second day itself.” With talks of Chennai curator K Parthasarathy being forced to take the nip out of the surface at the behest of Indian team management doing the rounds, it remains to be seen whether the Motera track will retain its present look till Thursday morning.

FROM TOI epaper Worries for Motera curator Ahmedabad: With two days to go for the second India-South Africa Test, the Sardar Patel Gujarat stadium curator Dhiraj Parsana is ‘‘keeping his fingers crossed’’ about the nature of the wicket, which has assumed great significance after the dreary draw on a docile Chennai track in the first Test. Parsana expects the wicket to be a ‘‘sporting’’ one, which means it will help the pace bowlers (in the early phase of the match), the batsmen (in the game’s second stage) and finally the spinners. If wishes were horses, then this of course would be true. But since they aren’t, a more pragmatic view of the ground conditions is called for. More realistically, Parsana takes into consideration the weather conditions here at this time of the year. ‘‘The ground temperature is 42 degrees celsius at the moment, and the heat may dry the moisture that is present in the track. Then the bounce will be low and the pitch may become slow,’’ said Parsana. Historically, the Motera wicket has helped the batsmen more than the bowlers, though it did turn a bit in the last Test India played here: in 2005 when they beat Sri Lanka. When asked what the BCCI’s pitches committee is doing about the state of the ‘dead’ Indian tracks, Parsana says: ‘‘Pitches on which domestic matches are being played are producing results, as the record will show. Unfortunately Test wickets have not proven to be so lively.’’ The pitches committee had as its head Kapil Dev, then subsequently, K Srikkanth, Kasturi Rangan, Venkat Sunderam and now Baljit Singh. But apparently the committee does not seem to be doing much in the matter of producing bouncy, result-oriented wickets. None of the previous eight Test matches at this venue were played in April, or any other summer month. But, the met department says there’s some hope for both the players and the fans in this part of the country where the summers are torrid: a depression has been sighted off the Arabian Sea and this may produce cloudy weather at the time of the match.

Prepare a fast track and pick Ishant, RP and Sreesanth. That is the receipe for success for India. Unfortunately that is not going to happen though. Bhajji will be picked as he picked up a 5 fer in the last test match.

Secondly, is it possible to change the character of the pitch completely within 3 days? If not, then how is the argument "that since Bhajji picked a 5 for in last match" going to stand?

Bump! Idjet curators! Even though pitch did not particularly contribute to our failure...we could have had a designer spin pitch, and had NOTHING for SA bowlers...we should have really done that, and that was what I was saying earlier too!

Guest Hiten.

Why do you "imagine" that our bowlers wont get the same assistance as SA bowlers ? - Sree rolled all over SA in Jo'burg and bundled them for 82 - RP has been bowling incredibly on seamer friendly tracks (in ENG, AUS) - IKP swung the ball quite smartly in perth and helped india win. I really hope you are not this pessimistic in your real life. One bad thing happens, and you jump on your panic button. GAWD

blue brigade, this thread was created after Madras, not pressing any new thing in this thread. The explanation is above: Both SA and India have good pace attack. Only India has decent spin attack (SA has crap spin attack). Give a pitch assisting pacers, result could go either way. Get a designer spin pitch, result will not go either way - India will win. When playing in SA, they favor their attack, in India, we should design ours so SA will lose. SA will not give even a bit of advtg to India when we play there.

Mouni, We shud also direct 25% blame to Indian captain(s) (75% blame to curators + other bcci idjet officials) Captains must ask the grass to be shaven off, and give some specifications to curators. They shud not tolerate just any pitch. SA captains will try their best to get green and bouncy in SA. Ofcourse their curators and board are better at listening.
