NEW DELHI: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has given additional time to the Indian Hockey Confederation (IHC) to initiate urgent action for the conduct of the 2010 World Cup that was conditionally allotted to Delhi last November. The Executive Board of the FIH that met in Lausanne from March 27 to 29 discussed the ‘Promoting Indian hockey’ project and the organisational aspects of the 2010 World Cup. “After having carefully studied the progress made with the project ‘Promoting Indian hockey’ as well as the actions taken in the preparation of the World Cup 2010, the Executive Board noted that satisfactory progress had not been made in either area,†an FIH release stated on Monday. The FIH has given time to the IHC to “urgently address†the issues before it takes a final decision on the World Cup. It had signed a memorandum of understanding with the IHC last November when it announced its keenness to see India host the World Cup as well as revive its hockey. In the meantime, the FIH is looking for alternative host countries in case it would be forced to take the World Cup away from Delhi. Charlesworth incident The drama surrounding the appointment of Australian Ric Charlesworth as technical advisor in Indian hockey has obviously been taken note of by the FIH. Charlesworth, it is learnt, is still unsure about his role with the men’s hockey team and is unhappy with the way things have moved with regard to various aspects of his assignment. At the moment he is concentrating on the Olympic qualifying bid by the women’s team. The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) had initially insisted on giving Charlesworth only a role in its junior development programme, while retaining Joaquim Carvalho as the chief coach of the men’s team. Pressure from the Union Government and the FIH, two of the stakeholders in ‘Promoting Indian hockey’, however, made IHF relent somewhat in giving some say to Charlesworth in the senior men’s team. ---
