Collier backs English version of IPL Cricinfo staff April 6, 2008 David Collier: 'We believe that an English Premier League will be very successful including a broad range of cricketers." © Getty Images David Collier, the ECB chief executive, has said it will be very hard for England's top players to take part in future Indian Premier League (IPL) tournaments because of the international schedule. He added that the ECB was preparing to adapt their domestic Twenty20 Cup to attract more leading players and offer an alternative to the IPL. "It is a question of finding periods of the year for this [the IPL] to take place," he told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek show. "We are one of the few countries who play in June, that is why our competitions are so successful because we can attract the best players in the world. That is why we believe that an English Premier League will be very successful including a broad range of cricketers." An expanded Twenty20 Cup is on the agenda of the ECB meeting this week and changes could take place as early as this season's tournament in June. An increase in overseas players is one option on the table with more drastic changes being discussed for the 2009 event. Recently, Kevin Pietersen has said that frustration is growing that England players are unable to take advantage of the money on offer. Dimitri Mascarenhas is the only representative from England, have coming to a deal with Hampshire who will release him for two weeks. There has been talk of the IPL being brought forward so it doesn't clash with the start of the English domestic season, but there isn't much room in a congested calendar. "The obvious time for the IPL to play is April and May, but that clashes with the start of our international season," said Collier. "We play New Zealand on May 15 in England, for our players to take part their schedule has to come forward a few weeks to fit into that calendar. We should also not forget that we go to the West Indies in the spring of next year. The IPL has said that the tours programmes will take precedence, and clearly that will clash with us being in the West Indies." Collier also said that it will take time to find out how commercially successful the IPL will be and that it will have to operate at a loss for some time. "Certainly if you look over a five-to-10-year period, we can believe the claims that Indian cricket is worth a billion dollars," he said. "But there are 10 franchises, and every one has a turnover of about eight million dollars, it is being said in India that those franchises will be making a loss for a number of years. "That is not unusual, in the US when franchises start, they make losses for a number of years. But if you are investing in such numbers, you expect a return in the not-too-distant future, and that will happen in India. But it will not be for a while." © Cricinfo I hope IPL does not take this too lightly, because EPL has all the chances of toppling IPL due to their professionalism. EPL will have equal number of sponsors lining up if not more.

Makes the game more exciting. I think this is a gradual paradigm shift from a national- based sport to a more professional one. This had to happen,a nd advent of multi- billion dollar leagues is a prelude to that. There is this great piece on IPL Watch. Catch it. It has links to the other Cricinfo story and the Andrew McGlashan piece. This is an exciting time in Cricket.

Aren't they going back to the 1 overseas player per county this season cuz they don't like the number of foreign players in their system...........now with this, they want way more overseas players..........stupid colonial idiots.

Here is my comparison: Cricket's EPL = Indian Football's I-League The Real Football Premier League = Indian Premier League Nobody will care about the 1st, the ECB won't be able to market their product well. The Premiership is a huge it, in Eng because its the main sport and in the rest of the world, because its well packaged. This is where the BCCI have a hige advantage, they have the cricket stars to market their league in the most cricket crazy country in the world.

I don't see anything wrong with a bit of competition. If the poms think they can establish a league which will rival India's IPL, they are welcome to try. I wouldn't mind seeing similar initiatives taken by the Aussies and the Saffies. WI already have a proper T20 base thanks to Moneybags Stanford sahab. Then we will have a proper club set up spanning the entire world (well, almost) and this will allow the ICC to stage the first ever CHAMPIONS LEAGUE OF CRICKET (what an original idea !) - pitting the top 4 teams from the IPL, against the top 4 from ENG, AUS, WI, etc. as they compete for glory in one big, massive, tournament which would run all season long with a prize money of $50 mil. Imagine that - we'd have individual cricket leagues running all year long ! International cricket will still have a presence, ie; world cups being played every 4 years - that's when you can see IND playing AUS, etc. But the rest of the time, we'll have teams in the IPL, Stanford T20, etc. playing each other week, vying for a place in that much-coveted top 4 in the attempt to gain entry into the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE OF CRICKET. How cool would that be ?? The teams which miss out on the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE OF CRICKET can go play 2 test-long series and the usual 7 ODI series crap that you see now. Those matches will become unofficial. Now don't hate me for saying this, but i reckon that's what the future of cricket will be like. You thought the IPL is evil ? Pfffffffffffffft...tip of the iceberg. Scared ? hahaha
