In American football, it is a bit of an honor when someone gets 100 rushing yards.  But no one whines if someone ends up at 98 because the coach decided to put someone else in there for the last play because it would be a better personnel grouping, or because they didn't want to risk injury to their star player, or whatever other reason.  But in cricket, the century obsession is out of hand.  

Impact should ideally be metrics driven.

 

The level of difficulty at various stages while accounting for conditions is known. For e.g. playing out the first session (teams can give 100 runs to pick up 3 wkts in most conditions), taking your team to a reasonable total when many key batsmen are out for nothing, battling it out in the 4th innings when the batting conditions and pressure can be tough to handle, and so on.
