it's just very hard being a brown kid growing up in the UK in the 80s. the far right National Front were known for p%ki bashing. as a 5 year old kid playing on the streets, just the sight of white skinheads would make me sh%t my pants. that leaves scars at a tender age. then you progress through life and realise you are different. nobody on tv looks like you. it's just the constant drip drip of feeling 'othered', inferior, not good enough. in my opinion the worst possible thing you can do to a kid is take away his/her confidence. meanwhile the classic asian parent response to all this is to push their kids to nail their studies. in some ways this actually makes things worse. asian parents, all parents in my opinion, should prioritise sports, and some form of physical aggression. i think that makes a big difference. anyway, i don't want to make out it is hell for asians in UK. it is not. you can be very successful, and there are huge numbers without a racist bone in their body. look at the UK govt cabinet, Rishi Sunak, Priti Patel, and Sajid Javid hold the highest positions of office after Boris Johnson. i have always seen racism as just one more thing one has to overcome to succeed in life. it doesn't effect me at all today and hasn't for a long time. i agree with you, standing up for yourself is the best way.
