‘Thrown’ off 3rd floor, recovery agent dies

New Delhi: While complaints against armtwisting tactics adopted by recovery agents are common, in an isolated case, a 32-year-old recovery agent has been on the receiving end of a violent attack by fellow agents. The victim, identified as Sajauddin (32), was allegedly beaten up brutally by the owner of his agency and three other recovery agents, and then thrown off the third floor of a building in Paharganj after he apparently failed to pay up the sum he had recovered for the agency. Sajauddin succumbed to his injuries in a hospital on Sunday — a week after he was assaulted. The police, which were initially treating this as a case of possible suicide, have now registered a case of murder and said they will soon arrest the four accused, including the owner of the recovery agency, Vikas Mehndiratta (40). The other three accused are Mahendra Singh (37), Tarun Bhalla (42) and Surender Saini (45). The victim’s dying statement — which the cops apparently failed to record — was videotaped by his family members and is being used as evidence against the accused, said the police. The deceased was working as a recovery agent for Oxford Management Services (OMS) at Jhandewalan in central Delhi for the past six months. His agency does loan recovery for several leading banks. The agency has claimed that Sajauddin collected money from several people but did not deposit the recovered amount with the agency, even after repeated warnings. The victim’s family, on the other hand, has claimed that the agency was putting pressure on him to meet the recovery target. On May 13, Sajauddin was apparently called to the Jhandewalan office and then threatened by officials there. They even made him call up his relatives, said the victim’s brother-in-law Azad Khan. ‘‘There were around six to seven persons at the office. They made Sajauddin call up his maternal uncle, Aziz Khan, and demand Rs 60,000. My uncle tried to help by offering to bring the money there. But by the time we reached, he had been taken to Sir Ganga Ram hospital by the staff, who later took him to Safdarjung,’’ said Khan. ‘‘When we complained to police, they registered a case of causing hurt and grievous injury. Four persons were arrested and later released on bail. The accused also made him sign on a blank paper,’’ added Khan. The Paharganj police till Sunday maintained that Sajauddin was not fit to give a statement. But the victim’s family claimed that while Sajauddin repeatedly told them and lawyers that he was beaten up by four persons and thrown off the third floor of a house, the cops did not record his statement. The family later recorded his statement using a mobile phone camera. On Sunday afternoon, Sajauddin’s family members staged a protest at the police station after he succumbed to his injuries at Safdarjung hospital. The cops said they have now added two more sections of IPC — section 302 (for murder) and 364 A (kidnapping for ransom) — to the case and all the accused will be arrested again. They had earlier registered a case under sections 109 (punishment for abetment), 342 (wrongful restaint) and 330 (voluntarily causing hurt to extort confession) of IPC. Said DCP (central) Alok Kumar: ‘‘We have registered a case and will arrest the accused again. The nature of injuries and exact cause of death will be clear once the post-mortem report is out. Investigations are on.’’ Sajauddin is survived by his wife and two children, who stay at Jal Vihar near Lajpat Nagar. His younger brother Qasim told Times City: ‘‘The police should also take action against those who employed these people. Gurgaon: More than 17 months after a Gurgaon-based doctor died in a case of road rage, a local court acquitted the two accused on Tuesday for lack of evidence; the complainant and three other witnesses failed to stick to their statements to police. After considering the evidence, additional session judge Narendra Kumar ordered the acquittal of Jitesh Godara and Narendra Singh. Police had initially registered a case of rash driving against them in October 2006 after an FIR was registered by a neighbour of the victim, Dr Amit Dewan. The neighbour and three other witnesses had alleged that Jitesh and Narendra deliberately hit Amit, a radiologist, with their Tata Safari and severely assaulted him on the night of October 18, 2006, outside his house in Sector 10A. Amit’s father, B R Dewan, lamented that the cops didn’t investigate the case properly. Locals had also alleged that Amit was beaten up and thrown against a heap of bricks. :omg: Amit, who had received multiple injuries, was taken to a private hospital by his wife and neighbours. He slipped into coma. The police filed a case against Jitesh under Section 279, 337 and 338 of the IPC. He was arrested on October 19, 2006, but later released on bail. Members of Amit’s family had objected to police treating it as a case of rash driving and had complained that it was an intentional attack to kill him. Significantly, a construction labourer, who had also received injury on that fateful night, was also a witness in this case. On October 22, 2006, Amit was shifted to Ganga Ram Hospital in west Delhi as his condition became critical. As pressure mounted on police, they lodged a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the IPC against the two accused. Forty days after the incident, Amit died on December 1, 2006, and police registered a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC against Jitesh and Narendra.

Road rage ‘victims’ turn into accused

New Delhi: The city has been in the news lately for cases of road rage, but this time round, there’s a case with a twist. On Tuesday night, the police arrested a woman and her male friend for allegedly beating up four women after their cars bumped against each other at Prashant Vihar around 11:00 pm. As it turned out later, the complainant became the accused and viceversa as the four women actually beat up the two with the help of their relatives and when police came, created a scene to escape arrest. The two, identified as Divya Singh, a director at an event Management company in Bhikaji Cama Place, and her friend, Sunil Kumar, a taxi hiring contractor, were on their way home to Rohini when their Tata Indigo car bumped against a Mrauti van, carrying four women — Sushma Pandey (21), her mother, Kamla, her sisters, Rachna and Vidya. According to police, the women started screaming and yelling at Divya and Sunil and as Sunil came out to talk to them, they started beating him up. They then called up four of their male relatives, who reached the spot in no time and started manhandling Sunil and Divya. In between, someone made a PCR call and a police van reached the spot. According to a police official from Prashant Vihar police station, “As soon as we reached there, we found Sushma’s clothes torn and the four women screaming and yelling that Sunil had torn her clothes and he and Divya had beaten them up. So, we took them to the police station and sent them for a medical examination.” He added that throughout the day on Wednesday, Sushma kept crying and alleging that Sunil had misbehaved with her. However, Divya kept insisting that she was innocent. “It was just me and Sunil, there were no four other men and they beat us up, not vice-versa,” said Divya. After the medical report came out, it became clear that Divya wasn’t lying. According to the police official, the four women had actually beaten them up with the help of four of their relatives. After sustained questioning, they admitted that they had been lying. We have booked the four women, along with one of the relative, Satish, who had aided them, while three others are still absconding,” said the police official. He added that Divya and Sunil were released and allowed to go.

Match turns violent

New Delhi: A cricket match between two groups of boys turned violent when one of the group’s captain was stabbed by the other team’s captain. Police said, the incident took place on Sunday evening at Punjabi Bagh in west Delhi. The victim, Abdul, in his early twenties is said to be out of danger and stable. He has been admitted at a local hospital. Police said the fight erupted after Ravi, the opposing team captain refused to go back to the pavilion even after he was declared out. When Abdul and his brother Wasim protested, Ravi stabbed Abdul. Police has registered a case and are investigating the case. ‘‘We will arrest the accused if required,’’ said a senior police officer.

Youth thrown off train after argument

Ghaziabad: A 20-year-old man was thrown out of a running train on Sunday morning. The victim, Abhishek Yadav’s finger had to be amputated to save him. According to sources Yadav was coming to Delhi in the Howrah-Delhi Mail to appear in an exam. Doctors at the hospital told reporters that his Yadav got into an argument over seating arrangements with some people. He had objected to non-reserved passengers occupying the seat and was thrown off by the passengers for this reason.

She refused to bribe cop, got thrashed New Delhi: A head constable allegedly misbehaved with a 40-year-old woman and thrashed her at the Buddh Vihar police post under Sultanpuri police station recently. The woman, working with a private security agency, had gone to file a complaint with the police after she lost her purse in a Blueline bus, plying from Shivaji Stadium to Sultanpuri. The head constable had demanded Rs 200 as bribe which she refused to pay and he slapped her, she alleged. However, senior police officers have refuted the allegations, saying it is the woman herself who got impatient and started misbehaving with the head constable for not registering her complaint. They said that it took time for him to file the complaint because the woman, who is a former staffer with Delhi Home Guard, failed to specify the spot where she had lost the purse. The police said she did not give the head constable time to verify her claims. ‘‘We have got complaints from both the woman and the head constable. The head constable has complained that brawl was started by the woman herself. We will probe both the complaints. If the woman is found to be at fault, she will be booked for preventing a government official from doing his duty,’’ said Sagar Preet Hooda, DCP (Outer). Both the woman and policeman are reportedly residents of Buddh Vihar and knew each other. Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Barkha Singh said, ‘‘One of our members, Roshni Devi called up the Budh Vihar Police station to enquire about the case and asked for her complaint to be registered without any further delay. But the police said that no such incident happened.’’

In another case, a 19-year-old woman filed a case of rape when her landlord's brother-in-law refused to marry her after promising to do so. The victim lives with her family in Rajnagar in Dwarka. A month ago, a resident of Lucknow, allegedly got into a physical relationship with her after promising marriage. "On Saturday, when the victim asked him to marry her, he allegedly told her that he was about to get engaged to someone else and threatened to kill her if she told anyone about their affair," said the police. The victim and her mother later filed a complaint. The police said the 24-year-old accused has fled to Lucknow and will be arrested soon.

Aarushi-like case rocked Mumbai in 2000

MUMBAI: Father kills daughter to put the lid on his alleged extra-marital affair. A familiar plot, but the case is separated by a gap of more than eight years and two cities—Mumbai and Noida. The Aarushi murder case, which has rocked Noida, is like deja vu for the Talpade family of Malad. Rashmi Talpade (16) a Std XI student of Patkar College, was found in a pool of blood at her Malad residence on December 5, 2000, around 1.30 pm by neighbours. With little evidence at their disposal, the police struggled with the investigation. On December 11, the police made a sensational disclosure, charging Rajan Talpade (48) with murdering his only daughter. Rashmi was found with 17 injury marks on her body, apparently made with a kitchen fork. The fatal blow to her head was made, according to the police, with the dumbbells that Talpade used. The police made selective leaks, even floating the theory that Talpade had murdered his daughter as she objected to his "extra-marital affair” with the domestic help. When the case came up for trial, the police clammed up, as one evidence after another was discredited by the defence and the sessions judge. The medical report revealed that Rashmi had been killed after 9 am, but Talpade, an employee of Central Bank, was in his office at that time. The police could not come up with a motive behind the murder or prove Talpade’s involvement, forcing them to dilute the charges from murder to grievous hurt. Even these charges did not stick and the sessions judge, on January 30, 2002, acquitted Talpade and slammed the police for carrying out a "biased, incomplete and one-sided investigation". "For some reason known only to the police, (they) had made up their mind not to investigate the case and nail me as the accused," Talpade had told TOI after his acquittal and release. "Except for the Malad police, no one believed the preposterous suggestion that he could have killed the daughter who he loved so much," said his wife. In 2003, the Talpades moved the Bombay high court seeking re-investigation of the case and arrest of the "real" killer. Simultaneously, the police filed an appeal challenging Talpade’s acquittal. The CID (crime branch), ordered by the high court to conduct a fresh inquiry, has not come up with any results so far. "There are a number of parallels with the Aarushi murder case, especially in the circumstances and the way the police have handled the case," said advocate Vinayak Bichchu, counsel for Talpade. He, however, said there were "differences too". According to the advocate, one of the major difference is that the Aarushi case involves a double murder. "Also, when Rashmi was murdered ,the Talpades were not at home, while in the Aarushi case, the father does not seem to have an alibi," said Bichchu.

Delhi cops abduct trader for ransom

NEW DELHI: In a shocking case of cops turning criminals, two Delhi policemen allegedly abducted three businessmen from Rohtak, brought them to the capital and demanded ransom for their release. The kidnapping came to light after two of the three victims, who were released to fetch the ransom money, alerted cops in Rohtak. A red-faced Delhi Police have ordered an inquiry into the incident. While the businessmen were later rescued after a raid was conducted, the cops are absconding. Confirming this, DCP West, Sharad Agarwal, said, "The matter has come to my knowledge and an inquiry has been ordered. Action will be taken against the policemen involved." more

Woman, 75, killed in GK as family watched IPL

New Delhi: While the neighbourhood was glued to television sets watching the IPL final on Sunday night, suspected robbers broke into a house in south Delhi’s plush Greater Kailash II locality and murdered a 75-year-old woman who was alone at the time. The victim’s family members had gone to watch the match at a nearby community club in Alaknanda. The body of the victim, Hanslata Maheshwari, was discovered by her younger son, Sudhir Maheshwari (50), lying in a bathroom with her hands and feet tied and mouth gagged. Police said the assailants had strangled her with a stole and later tied her with it. The postmortem revealed that the elderly woman was hit on the head by a blunt object, which probably left her unconscious, before being strangled. The house, E-310, was completely ransacked and all almirahs were broken open using housebreaking equipment. About nine door locks were also found to be broken inside the house. A few suspects, including a part-time Bangladeshi domestic help, have been detained for questioning. Police say it is likely that an insider had provided the robbers with information on the movement of family members.

Romanian girl permitted abortion

An 11-year-old Romanian girl who is 21 weeks pregnant after being raped by an uncle will be able to have an abortion, even though it is forbidden by law. A government committee said the procedure should go ahead due to the exceptional circumstances of her case. Romania's abortion limit is 14 weeks. It had been suggested the girl might have to go to the UK for the abortion. Some 20 Christian Orthodox groups had threatened to press charges if the girl was allowed to abort the foetus. In a letter to the government committee, the girl said she wanted to be able "to go to school and to play". "If I can't do this my life will be a nightmare," she said, according to a text read out by government committee member Vlad Iliescu. Another committee member, Theodora Bertzi said the decision was made focusing on "the rights of this child who was subjected to **** and incest". Family decision The girl was raped by a 19-year-old uncle who has since disappeared. Her family only discovered she was pregnant when they took her to the doctor because she seemed sick. While some pro-life Christian Orthodox groups had urged the family to keep the child, and offered to raise it in a church institution, the Romanian Orthodox Church said any decision on abortion should be left to the family. The girl's parents had said they wanted to travel to a country where such a late-term abortion was legal. In Romania abortion is only normally allowed beyond 14 weeks if the mother's life is deemed to be at risk. In Britain, they can be carried out up to 24 weeks in some circumstances. A Romanian living in the UK had offered to cover the costs of a termination there.
