fineleg Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Someone I know has been living in the UK for about 7 years. This person had studied postgraduate and lived in the US for 3 years before that. He is an Engineering Development (software) Manager for one of the UK group in a big multinational s/w company. He operated out of the US office for a few years, and now out of the UK office. His is not a "director or Vice President" position, he describes it as a Mid-level Engg Manager for a team of engineers and testers. He is looking to go back to India with his family and is talking to a few companies back in India (incl. his own company's India office). He wants to get a feel for what would be good salary levels for people with his experience and background. He has lost touch with the Indian market and wanted to get a feel for it. From what he heard, apparently multinational companies in India pay around Rupees 2.5 to 3 lakhs per month (Rs.30-35 lakhs per annum) for mid-level Engineering managers who relocate...Apparently they pay about 30-35% salary of what you were getting in British pounds abroad for engineers, and about 50-60% of what you were getting in British pounds for 'Managers'. Any of you folks know if these bandied about numbers that he is hearing is about right? He plans to relocate from UK by end of the year. Incase the city makes a difference (since numbers may be different in different cities), his preference is to go to Bangalore or Hyderabad - since he has family in both those places.

fineleg Posted May 28, 2008 Author Posted May 28, 2008 Thanks for the note CR. Yes, he was mentioning that Indian cos. wont pay that kind. So, does it mean that Indian cos. need to settle for talent that is left over after MNCs have hired? Thats a tough situation to be in for the Indian cos!

I am also thinking about moving to either US or India soon so I know what kind of questions does he have. The only thing that worries me about going back to India is the 12-13 hrs day that a lot people put in .. not much Annual leave ... Maternity leave etc. Money wise I think Indian market is ok since the cost of living is low. I have never worked in India so I have this fear of unknown !
fineleg Posted May 29, 2008 Author Posted May 29, 2008 I dunno how it is in Australia, but if there is one thing (at least) that people in US envy people in India, then it is the vacations and holidayz people get in India. Its a lot lot more than in US. I dunno abt UK or Australia in comparison to India, so cant comment if it is better or not. DD, Regarding the website, I'll pass on the info - thanks. However, I think nothing like hearing from other folks who have direct info either working in India, or have contacts.

I don't mind gettting less vacation, but I can't Imagine working 10-12 hrs a day. Guy's gotta get a break. They work on weekends as well. When I first claimed that I can't work on a Sat, I was given looks by my mgr as If I had taken a day off unexpectedly. There a lot of personal attitudes one has to fight it out, esp at the top. The environment is not as professional as it is in the West. (All from my experiences).

In Sales & service the pressure is enormous and the managers don't miss an opportunity to show who is the boss. They can be aggressive , mean and at times abusive. For IT companies, yes there is growth but I have few friends who are developers and project managers working for big companies and they usually put in 12-13 hrs a day and of course they work over the weekends. One of the guy wanted to take 15 days off for his wedding and honeymoon and his manager told him that at the max 4 days and as for honeymoon , he will try and send him on a conference overseas in the next 3-4 months and he can take his wife along. :cry_smile:
graphic23 Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 One thing I've noticed in terms of administrations in India and here in the US is that they're a lot more "in your face" in India.They're very honest with you in terms of your performance (might exaggerate a bit) and will tell you on your face whether they like you or not. Here it is not so - everything is concealed until the last minute.

Why does he interfere with when and how the couple wants to arrange these things!
