Rashid is in a slightly different mould. He was tall like Kumble with a similar run up (Kumble was once a medium pacer iirc). Probably would have a slight more extended run up when bowling quick than when bowling spin.

the reason I don't equate him with kumble is not because of body type, but because of turn. kumble needed dustbowls to get significant turn, whereas barnes could -- as per contemporary reports -- achieve high spin (overspin and sidespin) at high pace even on dead tracks.

truly one of a kind bowler. 7 wkts per match at excellent avg, SR, and ER

My AT 11 (retired cricketers):

Top Order

  • Gavaskar: An opening batsman who is good against both pace and spin
  • V Richards: Viv has a good record in the top 3. Averages 60+ iirc. Great player of pace bowling and can bowl off-spin too if required
  • Bradman: 99.94 FM

Middle Order

  • Lara: Many options to consider but went with Lara to get a left-hander in. This left-hander scores quickly and has an appetite for 200s, 300s, 400s, & even 500s
  • S Waugh: With many free-flowing stroke players around, need a gritty player to weather the storm if required. A right-hander in the left-handers dominated middle-order. Can roll his arm too if needed. Kallis, who can bowl as well, was an option too but is more of a #3-4 batsman, while Waugh, who has played over 100 tests at #5, is used to dealing with pressure situations and flexibility required at this position
  • Sobers (c): Popularly known as the greatest cricketer. Garry will captain the side as well. He was known to be a risk-taker and a positive captain (said to have made a sporting declaration once to get a result). Maybe was playing "Bazball" long before anyone realized it. Can bowl both left-arm pace and spin
  • Gilchrist (wk): Amazing average as a WK. At times, I wonder what his average would be if he played as a specialist batsman

Bowlers

  • Hadlee: Was in two minds about Hadlee & Imran, but went with probably the biggest match-winner with the ball of all time. Can swing, seam, bounce, and bowl accurately
  • Marshall: Rated by many as the best pace bowler of all time. A mini-AR as well
  • Warne: The legendary leg spinner and a useful bat
  • Ambrose: Can be double dangerous in the 4th inning. Imagine Ambrose & Warne bowling in tandem on the last day

12th man

  • Barnes: swing + spin

@Vijy what is your latest AT11 (without any restrictions)

depends on pitch, opposition, conditions, etc. here is one XI; only current player is Smith, but he deserves to be there irrespective of how his career goes

Hobbes -- best sticky wicket batter of all time perhaps; more or less inventor of batting

Hutton -- probably best opener of post WW2 [close runner up: gavaskar and the super-consistent sutcliffe]

Bradman ['nuff said]

Graeme Pollock [greatest LHB of all time that I have encountered even in 70s/80s when he was old; introduces variety through left hand]

Stewie Smith [greatest bat of 21st cen; close: george headley, viv richards, barrington, hammond]

Sobers ['nuff said]

Gilly (wk) [close: Andy Flower, Kumar Sanga for 1-off test; Walcott for 1-off test]

Marshall [close: Steyn, Donald]

Warne [close: O'Reilly, Murali, Laker]

Ambrose [close: Garner, McGee, Trueman]

Barnes [with almost zero video footage, possibly the greatest bowler of all time -- bowling genuine spin at genuine medium pace speed]

batting till no. 9; 5 proper bowling options + 2 part-timers in stewie and pollock

good team. richards only played for 4 innings as opener, but it was vs a strong attack

yes, but you have him as opener. there is a diff between the two. most no. 3s are not suitable openers.

Richards has played all around the batting order. As an opener, he averages 70 but in 4 tests. If not for Greendige & Haynes, he may have opened in more innings :dontknow:

He just needs to play his natural game as the team has tons of batting w/ Hadlee at 8, Marshall at 9, and Warne at 10.

that's true. even Gilly can open, as he did that in hundreds of ODIs.
