On June 19 1865, enslaved African Americans were informed that they were free - 2 years after the signing of the emancipation declaration. 

 

Only a few years ago the Fed government declared it a national holiday.

 

Of course abolishing slavery was followed by 100 more years of official oppression but that's a story for another day.
