Coz Dhoni had moved away from Tests in 2015. He did pick him for shorter formats and Bumrah had to wait another 2 years to make his Test debut.

He probably realised he himself was not good enough in tests as captain and hence resigned..

Yup, he had much more shame than either Rohit or Kohli. He realized he wasn't doing much in Tests and rightly quit. Wish our two resident leeches do so as well but they're shameless.

Dhoni overstayed in ODIs and T20s, but not so much in Tests.

Compared to how long Kohli has overstayed (5+ years), Dhoni wasn't anywhere close. Plus he wasn't such a huge passenger. He wasn't an attacking player towards the end but still used to score useful runs. Kohli OTOH has done nothing but drag the team down.

But MSD wasn't touted as a "King" or our star player in Tests. He was a wkt keeper batter and better than the other options available at the time. MSD's strength was white-ball cricket and he did pretty well in that. Even then I don't think he sucked for 5+ years in Tests the way Kohli has.

MSD sucked in white ball cricket for quite a while before he left. His avg didn't drop a huge amount, but most of innings were scored at 85-90 SR and ended with defeats and him staying not out (that WC match vs Eng is an example).

 

Using MSD (or even SRT) as a role model for overstaying is a bad idea. Players should leave like Sangakkara or Sunny or Greg Chappelli

He should've left earlier, no doubt. But he didn't suck as much or for so long as Kohli has done. Plus his wkt keeping always remained good throughout. He wasn't anywhere close to uselessness of Kohli. He was still a better batter than what Kohli is now, never dropped sitters the way Kohli does, and he didn't start running out his batting partners.

 

Sangakkara timed his retirement perfectly, and I would say so did Jayawardene. The only Indian player who left at the right time was Gavaskar. Apparently he scored a 100 in his second last match before he retired.

scored 96 - one of the great knocks on a raging turner. Sunny was in decline too, but what he did is to have one good year with the bat, and wisely went out on a high.

 

Among those that I saw, the two batters that I genuinely regard as having left on a high after years of consistent peaking towards the end of their careers were Barrington and Greg Chappell.

Both were truly world-class batters
