I fail to understand the reasoning behind an Indian living in India trying to talk like an American, unless he/she works at a call center.

Just like people try to buy the same style of clothes like jeans, shirts, t-shirts, etc, and similar hairstyles. Why not wear your lungis, or shalwar kameez, or saris when in the West?? There is nothing 'Indian' about the English language, its an imported language so may as well speak it however you want. Fake accents will sound fake early on. But constantly speaking English like that, one usually 'improves' the accent. Trust me, I've heard it all in my school days where the desi school population out-numbered the whites:D. Initially, it sounds fake but it improves with time

Good point, but its when you start sounding absolutely ridiculous in your effort to speak it 'however you want', that problems arise. :D

I fail to understand the reasoning behind an Indian living in India trying to talk like an American, unless he/she works at a call center.[/quote'] i don't think people necessarily associate accents with a greater sense of self worth. its more a handicap that one acquires due to years of association. i dont know where my accent arose, since i had it while i was in middle school in india, and it gradually permeated into my hindi speech as well. furthermore, it is judgmental of those who claim that one accent is superior to another, and it is just as judgmental of those who claim that those with an accent have a greater sense of self worth... accents are probably the result of geography and association... anyone presumptive enough to conclude that their accent is more sophisticated than another's need only examine their grammar. for it is grammar and vocabulary that determine one's command over a language not their ruddy enunciation!

A couple of my cousins in India started talking with an American accent after hanging around my brother and myself and stuck with the accent long after we left :haha:. Personal fascination maybe? Who knows...it's just plain annoying though.
