Bombay HC slams Maha govt for inaction against MNS Zeenews Bureau The Bombay High Court on Thursday slammed the Maharashtra government for its inaction against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which took law into its hands by issuing an ultimatum over Marathi signboards. Division bench of Justice J N Patel and K K Tated was dissatisfied about government's inaction against hooliganism of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena activists last month. "If you don't have political will, then give that message to the people that we can not do anything," said Justice Patel. "Why no action has been taken against respondent number six (Raj Thackeray)?....Are some people 'untouchable' for you?" Justice Patel asked as government failed to file a proper reply regarding the action taken. The court also took note of Raj's tirade against Joint Commissioner of Police K L Prasad. "Your Home minister has failed to back up the police officer," the court said. The High Court gave the state government time till October 16 to initiate proceedings against the MNS chief Raj Thackeray. The High Court, while questioning the state government’s role, observed that all those who were terrorizing the common public and creating law and order problems were been given a free hand. The court even questioned state Home Minister’s role in the entire episode for his lack of support to Mumbai Joint Commissioner, who was trying to enforce law and order in the city. Intensifying his “Marathi vs non-Marathis” MNS chief Raj Thackeray recently issued ultimatums to the shopkeepers in the city to change the signboards of their establishments in Marathi. However, the ultimatum was not well received by the Vilasrao Deshmukh government, which warned that anyone taking law into their hands would be dealt with sternly. What can anyone do when the government is too scared to do anything? MNS goons many times announce their plan and then execute it when the police looks for cover. Raj Thackray even once warned the police not to interfere in their work. The police did not even respond to that warning.

I think this sort of one political party holding the entire law and order system to ransom happens only in Mahararshtra. That state has a terrible culture of allowing this to happen, whether it be Shiv Sainiks destroying gift and card shops, or driving away out-of-state residents from attending railway exams. Now, its this MNS. The police is understandably too afraid to take any stern action coz no one who's going to come to power next. If a brave Asst. Comissioner orders strict action against these rowdies, he may get transferred to some useless post in some rural district, if these goons win the next election. Sad state of affairs.

HC asks Maha govt to deal more sternly with Raj Thackeray Press Trust Of India Mumbai, September 25, 2008 The Bombay High Court on Thursday expressed its unhappiness with Maharashtra government's response to Raj Thackeray and his Maharashtra Navnirman Sena threatening shopkeepers not having Marathi signboards and asked the authorities to deal with him more sternly. In July this year, MNS had issued letters to shopkeepers, under Raj's signature, warning that if they did not put up Marathi signboards, they would be taught a lesson. Referring to this, a division bench of Justice J N Patel and Justice K K Tated on Thrsday said "terrorists send e-mails before the blasts. These people are sending letters." Government lawyer had a tough time explaining to the court why no action was taken against Raj for these letters. "If you don't have political will, then give that message to the people that we cannot do anything," said Justice Patel. "Why no action has been taken against respondent number six (Raj Thackeray)?....Are some people 'untouchable' for you?" Justice Patel said. Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association had moved the court in the wake of Raj's letter. The court then directed the state to ensure that law and order was maintained and asked government to take action regarding the letters. But on Thursday, the affidavit filed by Joint Commissioner of Police K L Prasad said the letters had been referred to the law and judiciary department and its opinion was awaited. The affidavit of principal home secretary Ajit Parasnis too said that the issue was "under scrutiny".
